World Series to
Start October 4
New York, Sept. 22.—The element
of travel eliminated from the world
series competition during the last
three years by the two New York
teams, is being considered in plans
for the baseball classic this season.
At a meeting of the club owners
of the Yankees, Senators, Pirates
Giants and Robins with Commissioner
I-andis yesterday, it was decided to
hold the first, second and sixth con
tests In the American league city be
ginning on Saturday, October 4, unless
a tie In either league necessitates a
playoff.
The third, fourth and fifth contests
will be staged In the National league
city. If a seventh is necessary, the
choice between the two contending
cities will he decided by tossing a
coin. The games will be played on
consecutive days at 2 o’clock, eastern
standard time.
In the event of a tie a series of
three games will be arranged by the
president of the league affected and
a new date selected for the first game
of the world series.

Nebraska Rifle Shots Show Up
Well in Marksmanship Contests
('amp Perry, O.. Sept. 22.—Due
chiefly to the efforts of Coach F. D.
Preston and team captain, Dr. Lin
•
coin Riley, the quality of marksman
ship exhibited by the Nebraska
civilian team has already reached a
high stage of development. Recently
three members of the team won
medals presented by the National
Rifle association to expert marks
men, and the securing of three of
these testimonials in a single day’s
shooting is regarded as unusual.
The youngest member of the team,
Harold Meier, 18, of Wisner, fieb.,
was the first to qualify firing a total
of 48 points in a possible 50 on 200
yard rapid fire tests. A repetition
of this feat gave him the award of
a decorative bar upon the medal
awarded. Edward Boll, Pierce, Neb.,
an ex-Unlversity of Nebraska football
star, was second to qualify as ex
pert marksman, with a score of 47
points in a possible 50 on 300-yard
rapid fire. Capt. F. D. Preston,
Omaha, followed Boll by winning the
same medal on (he 200-yard rapid
fire range, with a score of 47, which
he duplicated on the more difficult
300-yard range, also at rapid fire, for
the additional bar.
Julius Festner, Omaha, awarded the
same meda! for scoring 45 points
out of a possible 50, on the 1,000
yard range, the most difficult of the
ranges in use at Camp Perry.
The following members of the Ne
braska team represented the atate in
the match for the Port Clinton Trophy:
Csotaln Riley. Wiener: Adolph Gottami
and Edward Boll. Julius Festner. R. 1
Joseph and H. F. Schumann.

Washington went
on a hatting ram

and by driving
Mike Cvengros off
the mound easily
defeated Chicago,
8 to 3, and re
tained its two
game margin over
the Yankees, who
defeated Cleveland.
Waiter Johnson
faced the locals
and after getting
away to a had start because of an
error by Muege, settled down and
had little trouble holding the Evers
men. It was the 14th consecutive
game won by the Senators’ ace. He
also fanned five men, giving him a
■season's total of 154 and a life time
mark of 3,220.
Harris started the league leaders
to victory when he singled to left.
Cvengros was unable to stop the at
tack and retired after Bluege had
sent his club ahijad with a double
i which scored two runs. Johnson was
given sensational support, the work
| of McXeely in center and Maeiager
Harris at second base being out
standing. Peck led the batting at
t o k for the Senators with four hits
while Sam Rice ran his string of
safe hitting on consecutive games to
