Retail Distribution.
Not Wills, but the,
Sphinx.
In the. Chimpanzee
Cage.
Hard W'orh Does Not
Hurt.
By ARTHUR BRISBANE
y--/
The opening tomorrow of a huge
new retail store in New York City,
interests business men that retail,
ar.d manufacturers that supply
them. The new store, called “Saks
Fifth Avenue,” between Forty
ninth and Fiftieth streets, next the
Cathedral, is Fifth avenue’s far
thest uptown store.
Where the uptown march of bus
iness will stop no one knows. The
center of business may land in
Jamaica, os Long Island, as re
gards the fvture and greater New
'York.
Meanwhile merchants study the
three methods of adding to a busi
ness that has outgrown itself. The
first method, as with Saks, is an
entire block front new store on
Fifth avenue, while retaining the
original Herald Square establish
ment.
The second method is illustrated
this last week by the old firm of
R. H. Macy & Co., adding to its
gigantic establishment another, on
the same spot, 100 per cent bigger.
The third is the method of Mar
shall Field in Chicago, John Wan
► nmaker in New York, and others
building another block just across
the street from the original store
that has outgrown its capacity. ^
All three methods will succeed
side by side. Eventually, ev^,n the
biggest stores will be obliged to
imitate the swarming bees, and go
out to establish new hives, at in
tervals.
A successful merchant in New
York, asked to establish a branch
in a neighboring city with 400,000
inhabitants, replied:
‘‘Why should I, when I can open
another store 40 blocks from here,
and find a city of a million inhabi
tants waiting for me?”
With 6,000,000 inhabitants now,
soon to increase to 10,000,000 and
then to 20,000,000, New York is
bound to have business establish
ments with branches that will make
the biggest establishment of today
seem smsfll. And what is true of
New York is true of Chicago, De
troit and other swiftly growing
American cities.
Meanwhile, those great stores,
more than any other agency, con
tribute to the solution of the na
tion’s problem, which is economical
distribution of the nation’s prod
ucts.
Some colored citizens rejoice
that Wills, champion fighter, won
his fight with Firpo. Intelligent
colored men find great satisfaction !
n studying the features of the
great Sphinx 4hat looks across the
. sands of Egypt. Those features,
nose and lips, surviving thousands
of years, are distinctly African.
- Some scientists say that the mys
terious Sphinx, beside which a cam
el looks like a mouse beside an ele
phant, tells of a day when Ethio
pians were the . first astronomers,
, naming the stars, ruling great ter
ritories and erecting great mon
uments.
To find a way back to that Ethi
opian civilization would be more
important to the African race than
to answer satisfactorily the ques
tion, “how can we force Dempsey
to give Wills a chance at his cham
pionship?”
Russia regains old-fashioned
ideas. On Moscow’s streets ap
peared athletes, men and women,
entirely naked, except for small
aprons, and over their shoulders
red ribbons inscribed “down with
shame.” *
Citizens hunted them to the po
lice where they were warned that
“down with shame” is not the Rus
sian motto. The proper punish
ment for those young ladies and
gentlemen would be imprisonment
for a week, dressed in the awry
costume, in the cage of the great
apes, orangs or chimpanzees.
Observing their anthrapoid
brothers and sisters, they would
learn that the wearing of clothing
results frorjj many years of evolu
tion, end has considerably improv
ed the domineering two-legged
race.
Clarence Darrow, kind-hearted,
aays prison at hard labor will make
► , maniacs of his young clients, Loeb
r and Leopold.
No matter What happens, prison
will not harm them as much as did
the life they led before they went
to prison.
Darrow need not worry about in
sanity. Hard work won't make
them insane, never made anybody
insane, except when complicated by
such brutality as has long been
banished from our prisons.
Six months of hard labor will
make those young men much bet
ter than when they entered the
prison.
Had they been put at hard labor
six months before they rnmmitted
that atrocious murder the murder
would never have been committed.
Heaven knows what would hap
pen to this earth and it's semi-har
barous hundreds of miUions if *
great majority wore not held down
and kept sane by hard work.
The French acadpmy controls
the French language. Until the
academy approves, no word is
french.
(n consequence, French has be
come in its meaning, absolutely
certain, and it is used, for that reu
son, in all diplomatic documents.
That it has lost strength and rich
ness by this purifying process is
probable. The French of Victor
Hugo is feeble compared with that
of Villon.
The “40 Immortals” assembled
in Cardinal Mazarin’s old palace
firmly rejects the American word
“cocktail.” Membranes lining the
intestinal tract of 20,000,000
Americans would he vastly improv
► ed if these membranes would imi
» fate the French academy and ban
ish the cocktail.

A NY WOMAN, any man, can
/"A now have a well-developed
face and form. The whole, simple
secret of a well-developed form ia
in the number of blood-cells in
your body. You can now forget all
the theoretical talk about diet, ex
ercise, fad treatments, food-fats
and fat-foods. Nothing i3 of any
use, after all, except blood-cells!
Thin, run-down men and women,
with bony necks, sunken cheeks,
bony shoulders—all these are suf
fering from one thin g—too few
blood-cells. Science has proved
that S.S.S. helps to make the rich
reij-blood-cells, which you need.
Your blood is starving for these
new blood-cells! Cke your blood
the blood-cells it needs—take S.S.S.
the great scientific blood-cell
maker. S.S.S. has done marvels,
too, in making beautiful complex
ions, clearing the skin, making lips
rosy red, the cheeks full and plump
—because It rids the blood of im
purities which cause pimples,
blackheads, acne, blotches, eczema,
tetter, rash and rheumatism, too.
As the medicinal ingredients of
S.S.S. are purely vegetable. It may
be taken with perfect safety. This
is why S.S.S., since 1826, has meant
to thousands of underweight men
and A-omen a plus in their strength.
Start taking S.S.S. today and your
great problem, that of your per
sonal appearance, can be solved.
iS. S. S. is said at all good
drug stores in two ai«ai. The
larger sire ia more economical.
