    Bull Incentives
Cause Prices of
Wheat to Advance
European and Canadian Newt
Furnishes Skmulus, Rye

. der Pressure.
By CHARI.es J. LEYDEN.
I nlverMl Rprvlce Ntaff Correspondent.
Chicago. Sept. 16.—European and Ca
nadian news furnished the bull Incentives
in the wheat market today and prices
scored a big advance. Local sentiment
leaned somewhat to the bear aide on the
expectation of further Increase In the
visible and on the big receipts, but the
Interests that appear to be accumulating
wheat take an advantage of the days
when the news la bearish to add to their
lines. The east was credited with buying
wheat today, the opinion prevailing that
this was due to the extremely bullish for
eign developments In regard to ths crops.
Ttye a little more than kept par# with
wheat, while there was pressure on corn
end oats.
Wheat closed ltt€*2%c higher: corn
was *4<91c lower: oats were Uc off to
Vje advanced, and rye ruled 2’A&2%c
higher.
Winnipeg led the advance In the latter
part of the session, indicating that bull
ish crop reports are forthcoming on the
Canadian crop. The Co-Operative Pro
ducers’ association of Saskatchewan esti
mated the crop of the province at 126.
P00.000 bushels, which Is below the fig
ures of some of the American crop ex
perts whose estimates were subjected to
much Canadian ridicule awhile back*
The strength in wheat checked the
down turn In corn Just when the market
appeared especially weak. Eastern op
erators are credited with being short
corn and there has been an effort to
break the market However, while prices
war* lower today there wan- no general
liquidation and bull leaders here still ap
pear to be able to dominate the situa
tion In ths absence of heavy country
pressure on the cash market.
The underlying strength of the grain
situation apparently was evidenced by the
steadiness of the oats market In the face
of an Increase of 10.776,000 bushels in the
visible eupply. This huge gain caused a
small decline in the September, while the
other month, closed a little higher.
Hye made a eubetantial rally and there
was little weakness shown st any time.
Provisions were under nreseure. I.ard
ulosetl 20®30c lower. There was no
Usds In ribs.
P19 Note*.
Liverpool prlcss for whsat stagsd a
quick rerovsry after opening sharply low
er today, closing Mi pence off to 46 pence
higher. Ths rally was due to a continued
good continental demand, an advance In
Argentine exchange, and a good homo de
m*"nglleh farmers are not selling . much
wheat. The seaboard reported the Lnlted
Kingdom a good buyer of wheat.
Cables from Berlin and Parle empha
sized bad crop conditions, which In a
large measure are the cause of the per
aistent buying of wheat. Clearances from
Now York of 76,000 barrels flour warsi re
ported. World shipments wers less than
expected at 11,914.000 bushels. Argen
tins crops are now favorable aa a nils
with good rains In Cordoba, one of the
best wheat section,. ... ......a
The visible supply of wheat Increased
2 661,000 bushels. Xhe total la now larg

ceipts were 482 cars here. In the north
west arrivals were 1.836 cars. **?•"?*

Squall Strikes
Stock Market in
Last Half Hour
Oils, Motors and Steels All
Bear Evidence of Blow;
Baking Stock Strength
Feature of Day.
By HH'IIABD SP1I.I.ANT,
Universal Service Financial Editor.
New York. Sept. 15.—Alter being duil,
but fairly wtrong, all through tho morn
ing and well Into the afternoon, the stock
market waa struck by a squall in tho last
half hour today. Before the blow khs
over various groups of stocks, the oils,
motors, steels and others, bore evidence
of what they had gone through.
Crucible Steel was the storm messenger.
Directors of the company meet Tuesday to
pass on the dividend question. Toe
manner In which Crucible declined 3
points In a short >Aime this afternoon
made observers dmibtful about the
dividend being declared.
Earlier in the day action of the oils had
not pleased persons who looked or hoped
for a strong market. Tho oils have boon
disappointing. This time the trouble
takes the form of more gasoline cuts, not
only In this couritry, but In Mexico.
Strength of the baking stocks was one
of the features of the drab day. Rumors
are current of a merger of General Baa
ing. United Baking and the Ward com
pany. together with a close business ar
rangement with the Fleischmann com
pany.
Of the rails, the Rock Island Issuer
were exceptionally strong on the prospect
of a merger with the Southern Paclfto
Stock exchange transactions for tne day
aggregated 612.600 shares.
Rails declined on an average one-flftn
of a point and Industrials declined on an
average three-fifths of a point.
Cotton opened weak. The news was
almost wholly bearish.
All the grains, except corn, were fairly
strong and higher. Idverpool, from a poor
opening. Improved gi\idually.
Early In tha day hur markst bumped
Into a lot of selling. Inspired probably bv
the prospective increase in the visible
supply and the heavy tane of Winnipeg.
It absorbed these offering* very well aud
then went ahead in good style right up
to the close,* which was from l%c to
2%o up for wheat, from c to 2Hc
for rye, from *4c down to %c up ior
oats and from *4c to *ic down for corn.
Lard waa 22 to 26 points down.

New York, Sent. 15.—Bond prices Tailed
to develop a definite trend in today’s quiet
trading. Accumulation of selected rail
road issues enlivened trading in ths do
mestic list, but price changes generally
were narrow and insignificant.
Investment houses were leported to be
unloading some of their present holdings
In anticipation of the forthcoming Ger
man loan, but their scattered offerings
apparently were easily absorbed without
putting any strain on the market.
Liberty bonds failed to reflect the re
ported resumption of the treasury's sink
ing fund operations, said to have beau
centered on the third 4%a. This Issue,
with most of ths others, moved lower,
with ths treasury 4 Us suffering the
heaviest loss.
The turnover of several large blocks of
liberties on over-the-counter trading was
credited to buying for the treasury sinking
fund.
Demand for Rock Island obligations,
based on reports that ths Southern Pa
cific was buying the road’s gtock. was
a feature of trading In ths railroad
group. Other ssmi-spsculatlvs issues
which were active and higher included
Seaboard, Chicago St Eastern Illinois end
St. Paul liens. International Great North
ern adjustment 6s reached a new top
price at (7*.
