Defeats Former
Coast Net Star
Westerner in Trouble Several
Times During Day’s Play
but Sank Excel
lent Putts.
Nayatt, R. I„ Sept. 6.—Mrs. Doro
thy Campbell Hurd, Merian Cricket
dub, won the women's national golf
championship here today when she
defeated Miss Mary K. Browne, Doc
Angeles, 7 and 6, In the 36-hole final
at the Rhode Island country club.
Mrs. Hurd was far too steady for
Miss Browne. She played a fine
morning round of 81, and by so doing
established a lead of five holes. Miss
Browne’s play was spotty. She played
many good shots, but too many bad
ones to cope with Mrs. Hurd.
The battle was one of putters. Miss
Browne gained a hole on he very
first hole when she sank a 12 foot
putt.
First blood was drawn by the Cali
fornia girl at the second hole, w-here,
after again putting her approach Into
a bunker, she exploded to the green
and ran down a sidehlll putt of 18
feet. She was bunkered again on the
third and Mrs. Hurd squared the
match.
Mrs. Hurd Takes I^ad.
Mrs. Hurd took the lead at one up
on the sixth with a 25-foot putt for
a winning three.
Miss Browne was again In trouble
on the seventh and eighth hole* and
lost them, making Mrs. Hurd three
up.
On the eighth Miss Browne found a
brick in a sand trap and after playing
out, tossed the brick Into a nearby
pond with some show of anger.
Miss Browne trapped her tee shot
on the ninth but won with a five after
placing her iron shot In front of a
mound and pitching afterward within
three feet of the cup, and was two
down as they turned the first nine
holes.
Cards:
First nine:
Mrs. Hurd .*155 433 556—41
Miss Browne .546 434 675—44
Miss Browne Loses Tenth.
Miss Browne dropped another hole
when Mrs. Hurd sank a three on the
10th. She was 4 down when Mrs.
Hurd also won the 11th, the longest
hole on the course. Miss Browne
failed to sink a five-foot putt for a
6 to halve the hole.
Miss Browne again was In a trap
on the 12th and conceded the hole
after using two strokes to get out.
This made Mrs. Hurd 5 up and she
made It 6 when she took the 13th
hole when Miss Browne again con
ceded a hole without the formality of
putting.
Contes Baek on Fourteenth.
The California girl came back a
bit on the 14tli, which ahe won with
a 4 by running down a 15-foot putt.
The Philadelphian took the six-hole
advantage again at the 15th, which
she won with a 4.
The 18th went to the coast player
when she sank a 10-foot putt for a
4 after taking three to get on.
The cards:
Mrs. Hurd .364 554 535—40—81
MBs Browne . ...47x 645 534—.. —..
Miss Browne started the afternoon
round in gallant show, winning the
first hole with a fine par 4 .
Mrs. Hurd missed the first tee shot
she has missed in this match off the
second tee, topping into the swamp.
She llftbd for a penalty and took 7
to the hole, Miss Browne winning it
with a 6 and becoming but 3 down.

Renault Wants
to Meet Nothing
but Heavies Now
Firpo and Dempsey Only
Fighters Who Would Draw
Crowd If Matched
With Canadian.
EW YORK. Sept. 6.—
•lack Renault, Canadian
heavyweight c li a m -
piun, who attracted a
lot of attention by
knocking o n t Floyd
Johnson and still more
h.v handing Karl ley
Madden a worse beat
ing Ilian did Harry
Wills, is ready to jump into Ihe ring
with any heavyweight in the world,
regardless of color, creed or country.
Jack says as much. So does Leo
P. Flynn, who has brought the Ca
nadian along carefully to a point
where he looms up as a candidate
for Jack Demsey’a crown. However,
that does not mean that any really
big matches are in sight for Renault
before next summer.
Outside of Dempsey and Firpo
thera are no white heavyweights
around who would serve to arouse
grtat public Interest if matched with
Renault. Gibbons is a light heavy
weight and evidently Intends to stay
in that division unless he can get an
other bout with Dempsey.
Wills, George Godfrey and Bill Tate
are the leading negro heavyweights.
That means that there are only four
or fire heavies now In (he business
who would fit in with Renault for a
really big card. Most of these will
not he available until next summer.
Dempsey does not rare to box this
year because of Ills moving picture
work. Firpo and Wills sre to have
it out between themselves on Septem
ber II, and by the time they are
ready to go again Ihe outdoor season
will be at an end.
That leaves only Godfrsy and Tste,
and Renault and Godfrey have been
matched for a bout *t the National
leagus ball park In Philadelphia Sep
tember 8. Godfrey has be»n having
a lot of trouble getting good matches.
Renault knocked out Godfrey in the
11th rtund of a bout In New York a
year ago last March. That feat by
Renault was rather much of a sur
prise and having got away with It
once It might be taken for granted
that the Canadian would not care to
meet Godfrey again.
Anyone doping It out that way,
however, would he 100 per cent
wrong Though Godfrey apparently
hae come along considerable elnce he
took the count at the handa of Ren
ault, the latter not only accepted an
other match with the Black Shadow
of Leiperville. but fairly Jumped at
the chance and promlaes to knock
Godfrey out again. In lesa time than
wae required In their first bout.
Renault and Flynn make one re
striction In regard (o future oppo
nents. light heavyweights are barred.
Renault is a heavyweight and he
wants lo meet nothing hut heavy
weights.
"Ws would like to get s crack st
Dempsey next summer.*’ said Flynn.
“But that doesn't mean vve want It
without earning It. I think Jack si
ready has earned It, hut If Firpo or
Wills or any of the rest of them want
to have a little argument with Ren
ault about It, all they ha vs to do Is
to get a promoter and lay a contract
In front of me.”

Sire of Edna V and Doctor Horn
Purchased on Advice of Jockey
Now Is Pride of James A. Hall
By GEORGE \\. SCHIIJJNG.
O OWN the sire
of «u-h speedy
horses as Edna
X and Doe Horn
is to consider
oneself rich in
horseflesh.
This is J. A.
Hall, a visiting
horseman here,
who of late years
has broadened
out as a breeder
with a most pre
tentious establ
ishment at Stan
berry, Mo. He Is
the proud owner of Flying Squirrel
who has in his court some 30 marcs
of choice blood lines.
With Flying Squirrel having pro
dured Edna X and Hoc Horn his
worth as a successful stallion has
been established. And to ex Jockey
Carrol Shilling, now trainer for Gif
ford Cochran of New York, belongs
the credit of urging Hall to acquire
this grand Individual.
Years ago when E. It. Thomas was
racing a big stable of horses at Em
eryville, Cal., Schilling was the stable
Jockey and Flying Squirrel was one
of the E. R. Thomas string. Shilling
rode the giant chestnut In all of his
races until he went wrong and al
ways contended that he was the fast
est horse he ever swung a leg over.
Bought lilt at Tijuana.
When Hall was In search of a stal
lion and happened to remark as much
to the ex-rider. Shilling urged that
Flying Squirrel be gotten no matter
what the cost. The stallion was then
at Baltimore. Hr. R. E. Ixivell had
purchased him and wrote Hall telling
him of the fact.
Dr. l>ovell was then In Nebraska
and there seemed to he little chance
for Hall to purchase the stallion. But
that fall the doctor shipped to Ti
rana and notified Hall of his move,
llall Busy Training.
Across ths continent went Hall
with his horses and when he shipped
away from the Mexican track Fly
ing Squirrel was In his car. The stal
lion was his.
Today Hall, who is here with
Manokln. Old Blues, Margaret Elnora.
Old Paige. Pauline M. Sundo. Mabel
Van. Billy Skid and Esperanza. Is
busily engaged getting these horses
ready for the races. However, he
found time yesterday morning to
show me six yearling colts and fillies
by his noted sirs that he has here
teaching them their early racing
lessons. Destined to be shipped to
Tijuana this fall to vie for honors
in ths rich Juvenile stakes to be de
cided st the famous Mexican course
this winter. Hall ordered the stable
attendants to lead the baby thorough
breds out for our Inspection. What
a picture they made. Each straight
of limb, of good bone snd splendid
conformation, they seem to have in
herited the very points that made for
ths extreme speed of their daddy.
No one could ever doubt as to wha
their sire was.
The entire list of the Hall yearlings,
their names, sex. color and breeding

If ills Confident
Ww York, Sept. 8.—"I will stop
Firpo with a light hand uppercut
in the first round!” *»ys Harry
Wills, negro heavyweight, who
tackles the Wild Bull at Boyle's
Thirty Acre* on September II.
"The first body blow I loud will
win the fight, which will be over
quickly!” declares Firpo whenever
he is asked to declare himself.
If Wills and Firpo fight accord
ing to their present plans, the
hout will not last long. Wills,
who has been in training for more
than six weeks, must avoid going
stale. Firpo, on the other hand,
will be furred to indulge in hard
work right up to the last moment
in order to get down to his be*t
fighting weight.
Firpo, it Is conceded, is the
heaviest right-handed swinger in
the ring, not excepting Dempsey.
But how will ho behave when
Wills meets his rushes with a
flurry of aolld lefts In the face*
Wills has seen enough of the Wild
Bull in aetlon to know how to
fight him scientifically. But
will the negro maintain his equi
librium when Firpo drive* home
his right to the stomach or jaw
in a mix at close quarters? These
and other questions ran only be
settled in the ring.
