    Clear Skies in
Corn Belt Make
Break in Prices
^Tieat Has Opening Bulge
l but Reacts to Moderate
Losses at Close, Oats
Draggy, Rye Breaks.
By CHARLES J. I.F.THEN.
rnlversnl Service Staff Correspondent.
Dhlcago. Aug. 21.—Clear skloa and sun
shine over wide arena of the corn belt
led to heavy liquidation of long line* In
the pit today, breaking prlrea aharply.
Wheat had an opening bulge but encoun
tered free aelllng and reacted to moderate
losaea at, the laat. There waa a world of
tiull news circulated 1n the wheat pit
early, but apeculatlve buying fought ehy
of the market.
Wheat closed 4 9 4*' lower, corn was
3'i9’4 4« off. oata were 1849240 lower
'end rye ruled lUfISr down.
Elevator houses were big huyera of Sep
tember wheat agalnet male* of the De
cember at (Pie difference. The carrying
i charge fa the widest on the crop and
I very attractive to holders of the caah
article. Foreign crop newa waa dlatlnctly
unfavorable, hut the weight of the do
mestic grain dominated finally.
A good export trade developed on the
break, sale* of 1,600.000 bushels wheat
being confirmed. Half of thla amount
w*a sold out of the Chicago market.
Liverpool waa unexpectedly strong, finish.
Ing 14 924d higher.
Dorn turned very weak. Liquidation
and pressure from bears offset the scat
tered buying power and ran the market
Into stop-loss orders. Weather conditions
over the west and southwest were gener
ally Meal, with temperatures averaging
around 80 degree*. Cash corn was In
good demand with the basis strong The
movement of corn la only moderate and
arrivals are well taken.
Oata were draggy. Hedging sales and
liquidation carried prices off. The m- ve
ment of new crop oata la steadily In
creasing Cash oats met good demand
with premiums half cent higher.
Rye firmed during the first hour with
■wheat, hut encountered free commission
house aelllng on the bulge and broke
aharply.
Provisions encountered heavy llqulda
tion and broke badly with corn. Lard was
80940c lower and riba were 6 915c lower.
Pit Notes.
Sentiment In wheat ha* turned bearish
for the time being Oenerally the mar
Vet 1* being regarded as a merchandising
proposition. The North American crops
have practically been secured, while har
vest In the Argentine and Australia is
loo far away to become greatly concerned
over drouth complaints. The extent of
the domestic and foreign demand for the
cash article ts what count* at the mo
ment, and the lack of It makes hulls
u ary.
Europe apparently needs wheat, but not
so extensively that foreign buyers will
follow the upturns around current levels.
A big business was uncovered today on
the break, but the liquidation under way
ehaded the fresh developments. American
interests were credited with buying wheat
at Liverpool, believing that market Is too
low relative with Chicago and Winnipeg
There were reports of frost early oYer
the Canadian northwest and complaints
that heavy rains over the American
spring whest territory damaged grain al
ready cut. Only feeble buying wae ef
fected. Commission houses had selling
orders on every hard snot, and It was
believed that one of the biggest operators
in the trade was unloading.
Tjjie primary receipts of wheat were
3.044.000 bushels. against
1.814,7)00 bushels last year. There were
over 108 cars of wheat Inspected In the
,local market. The movement In the
middle west was slow In getting started
this year, and while th** harvest was not
as good as In the southwest proportion
ally. still Chicago Is hound to get good
receipts for the next few weeks at least.
There were 300.ono bushels wheat sold to
atore today. Deliveries on September con
tract mav or may not be large. if thev
are small It won’t be for the lark of
wheat, but rather because of the gttrac
f < carrying charge cash Interests will
obtain hy placing their hedges In the
December delivery.

American Can were the strongest stocks
of the day. Pipe went to 104%, the
highest In Its history, and closed at ,
105%—2 points up for the day.
Corn Products, like General Baking, ,
Is understood to have done Its shopping
early and through hugs purchases of Ar- |
gentine corn at prices very much below
that of American corn, to be In a highly
advantageous position today.
Nash Motors was the spectacular per
former of the flay. It rose to 124. That
ia 11% up from the low of Wednesday.
Davison Chemical picked up 2% points
of Its loss of the nay before. A few of
the oils were strong. General Petroleum
In particular, and some of the rubbers
Department store Issues, as a rule, were
weak, and some of the metals held off I
owing to the drop In copper prices. Near
ly all the steel shirtea were low-er. United
States Steel declined 1 %.
Apparently the copper# and the alls
are not yet out of the woods.

shares Rails declined on an average of
% point and industrials A of a point.
Dealings In Corn Products. American Can
and United States Cast Iron Pipe made
up more than 10 per cent of the business
of the day.
There wasn’t much action In tha cot
ion market. The bulla were afraid and
the bearj were timid.
All the grainsNvere down, corn being
particularly weak. Reports from the Mis
sissippi and Missouri river country were
that old fashioned corn weather prevailed.
Wheat was up In price at Liverpool
and also at Puenos Aires, and light frosts
were reported In western Canada. In the
day there was a strong market. The
clo«e was at a loss of 5gf?/slc a bushel.
Corn slumped badly and closed from
2\f/4%c down, the larger decline being
in the distant positions Oats were weak
and c losed 1 % 0 2 %c; off Rye followed
suit, losing from l’*01%c of Its recent
gain. Lard dropped 36 to 3* points.

I New York Bonds
c_-;
New York, Aug. 21.—Reactionary ten
dencies prevailed In today's bond mar
ket a« the hardening of time money
rate* « aused general w ithdrawal of buy
in* support. United State# and foreign
K'»\ eminent obligations, domestic railroad
and public utilities issues all drifted
lower, although selling pressure was not
particularly heavy except In a few iso
lated cases
The advance In nine funds and com
merciai paper, marking the firat turn In
the money situation In many weeks, had
a decidedly chilling effect on bond trail
ing. which haa derived Ha main stimulus
throughout the summer from the prevsil
Ing low ratea. With Increased demands
resulting from reviving trade and the
crop movement, there was also a per
ceptible decrease in the amount of call
money offered st 2 per cent with Indi
cations that this rate would be forced
higher before the end of the month
Liberty bond* were the first to reflect
uneasiness over the money situation, at.
live issue* declining a-.l^ds to 10-32d*.
Sorn* liquidation of foreign government
and high grade rail securities which had
been acquired on the basis of their
.ilgher yields also resulted.
Individual features of trading were
supplied by the Wilson A <!o con
vertible Issues, St Paul Railroad and
I'arolioa, Clinchfleld A Ohio hens. Re
port* that the terms of the Wilson r*
organisation affecting the company a
bonds would be espe* ially drastic caused
*4 sharp break In the convertible "4*
which at one time were about 7 points
lower. A net lose of 4 4 points on the
-lay was recorded, with the 6a loeing i
points.
Intimation by bankers that the St
Paul railroad refunding program would
he deferred until next spring led to un
loading of these Issues which had been
pushed up recently by speculative buy
ing. based on the success of other rail
road refunding operations Carolina.
Cilnchfield Ohio 6s jumped 2 points
following announcement that the Atlantic
1‘oast line and Louisville A Nashville
Jointly had a- ep’ed the lease of the
road.
