Grains Touch New High Levels After Wild Pit Trading Longs Absorb Vast Profit Taking Sales on Swells During Saturday Session. . , Br CHARLES J. LEYDEN I nlvmal Hervlce Staff Correspondent. Chicago. July 26.—Wild trading was resumed In the wheat pit today and with Winnipeg In the lead prices marched steadily forward to new highs on the crop. Cumulative buying entered the pit throughout the session, and easily absorb ed the vast amount of profit taking that was encountered on every swell. Evidence that Europe had suddenly awakened to the remarkable strength In the world situation was plainly In evidence. IIheat closed 3 Vk to 4 Vic higher; corn ■was Vk to 314c higher; oats were % to 2V4c higher, and rye ruled 614 to advanced. Exporters were heavy buyers of wheat here and in Winnipeg. Seaboard reports had It that large buying orders for wheat and flour were taken over Frldey nignt. The strong close at. Liverpool started prices sharply higher here and in the Canadian market and while there were periods of dullness during the session at no time did the market show signs of weakening. Corn was again strong, especially the deferred deliveries, which reached new highs. Commission houses and local oper ators were buying freely on the weak spots. Near the last prices eased because of the failure of the cash market to hold, premiums dropping 1 to 1 14c. Thia however, was not taken to mean much. The biggest trade so far was on in oats. Leading commission houses and active loral traders bought throughout the day. while cash interest sold. Rye soared In a big trade. Near the last It was impossible to buy this grain except at rising prices. Provisions moved higher with grains and hogs. Lard was 10 to 16c higher and ribs were 7 •*> to 16c higher. Pit Notes. Winnipeg July wheat got above the $1.60 mark today. In f*tt. prices there were relatively higher than c'hieago at the last, being 5*R(ij)7%c ad vanced. Winnipeg July closed 17V4c over our delivery. The cheapness of wheat in the Chicago pit is dally accentuated by the relatively bigger gains In foreign markets. There were 326.000 bushels wheat sold out of here for export today. Uraln men say that unless the new crop movement increases shortly the visible supply will decrease sharply, an unusual situation at this time of year. Crow reports from Canada told or a startling poor situation over the three provinces. It seems to be agreed that regardless of future weather develop ments In that country the harvest can not be but half of last year. American experts have been repeatedly stating such things for several weeks. And the world, particularly those countries In it that must buy wheat, are at last alive to the situation. The country sold large amounts of new c rop wheat over’Friday night and during the session today. Hedging sales were fairly heavy, hut the wonderful buying r.ower exhibited gradually swallowed up this pressure. Cash wheat in all mar kets kept fair pace with the upward swing in the pits. The Russian food situation this year Is likely to be serious for millions of neople in that country. Reports todnv said that between 7.000.000 and 8,000.000 people will have to be cared for. It was re ported that the soviet government has already arranged for $32,000,000 to rope with the situation, half of which will be used for the purchase of seed. With Russia out of the market as an exporter this season the world situation is further strengthened. Foreign political news was regarded as favorable to the bulls. CHICAGO CASH PRICES. New York, July 26.—Considering the pronounced rise in prices of the earlier days of the week today’s stock market whs very good. American Can went to 120Vi. That would seem high for a b per cent stock but Can Is measured not by what It pays now but by what it is ex pected to pay six months from now. Baltimore & Ohio and Rock Island went to new highs. The features of the market were the merchandisers—Sears Roebuck, Montgomery Ward, Associated Dry Goods, Kinney St Co., and such. Kin ney was up 7 Vi points. Associated Dry Goods 4 Vi, Sears 2* and Montgomery Ward, 1V4. Various of the coppers did well end so did some of the oils. The sugars were particularly strong, Cuba Cans, Punta Alegre, Manatla and South Porto a..< o moving up from % to 3 points. Evidently Wilson & Co., are In better shape* than the bulletins from Chicago on Friday made it appear for there waa good buying of the share* of the corporation, the common regaining 1*4 points snd the preferred Agricultural Implement and fertiliser shares were popular. Prosperity in the grain belt Is reflected in good orders for International Harvester. Advance Humely ami the others In that field. The announcement of a cut of 2b cents In mid-continent crude by ths Magnolia had no appreciable effect on the oil stocks. Some big interests are persistent In their accumulation of General Electric. The turnover in this issue in the two-hour a-.- slop was more than 12.000 shares. Its price ranged from 240 to 26b and ran in to considerable money. In comparison with the grain markets stocks were tame. Transactions aggre gated 610.600 shares. There was little change in the average for the rails. Ths indUHirikl* advanced slightly mors than % of h point. The rails now are on an average mors than 10 points up from a year axo and the industrials 9 1-3 points Foreign exchange was suffer. Sterling up lVi,; Francs * points, and lar# points. Totton was on one of its periodical Jamborees. The market paid no attention to reports of mattered rains and lower temperatures in Texas. Bullishness was rampant. In the two hour* session prices were seen kiting from 12b to 1j2 points above Friday's close. The closing price was about the highest for the day. The grain market was very active end strong, in the July wheat option the dtr f«rence between Friday’s « lose *nd the high of Saturday was more than ® cents. News from Canada was not so nan HS of late but mat didn’t suggest that it waa in any way good. „ , . Best prices were seen in the first hour of trading Then came a wave of profit taking which considering Its large volume was taken very well. In the last hair hour there was some heavy eelllng corn.
