Defiance Starch company, located
at Twenty-fifth and Cuming streets,
a business established in 1898 by the
late George A. Joslyn, hns been pur
chased by a group of well-known busi
ness men, and Wallace E. Shepard,
Jr., has been made secretary and
manager of the company. Announce
ment Is made by Frank W. Judson,
father-in-law of Mr. Shepard. Miss
Dorothy Judson and Wallace Shep
ard were married last April. Mr.
Shepard has been associated with the
Woodmen of the World.
The Defiance Starch company man
ufactures both (laundry and corn
starch. The products are well known
throughout the country owing to an
extensive publicity campaign con
ducted by Mr. Joslyn at the time
they were first put on the market.
New stockholders of the company
are Howard H. Baldrige, Frank W.
Judson, George H. Kelly, H. Malcolm
Baldrlge, Wallace E. Shepard, Jr.;
Harvey Christensen and T. P. Cole
man of Omaha,' Henry J. Bartenbach
of Grand Island, Neb. Officers of the
company are: Frank W. Judson,
president; H. M. Baldrlge, vice presi
dent; George H. Kelly, treasurer, and
W. E. Shepard, Jr., secretary and
manager.
“The company, owned by Omaha
and Nebraska men, Is a 100 per cent
Nebraska Institution,” said Mr. Jud
son. “The raw product used by this
company Is grown in this state and
the finished product manufactured in
Omaha.”
Capacity of the business will be
greatly Increased, according to Mr.
Judson. The business, now located
at Twenty-fifth and Cuming streets,
will be moved into the jobbing and
manufacturing district, into suitable
and larger quarters. At the time of
Mr. Joslyn's death the business was
taken over by Arthur M. Pinto, who
continued in charge until his death,
since which time it has been managed
by Mrs. Nellie F. Pinto.
Judge Colby Believed
Well on Way to Recovery
Beatrice, Neb., July 26.—Judge
(Gen.) h. W. Colby now seems to be
on the way to recovery after linger
ing at the point of death in a Roch
ester (Minn.) hospital for several
days, according to a letter received
from Mrs. Colby, who is at her hus
band’s bedside. Despite his nearly 80
years Judge Colby, who Is a veteran of
the civil, Indian and Spanish-Aroerl
can wars, appears hardly 60 when In
good health. His unusually strong
constitution and a courage for which
he has been famous for many years,
are now depended upon to assure his
recovery.

setting up exercises, spend the morn
ing in classes. Then there are life
saving tests and diving form to work
on, and boating tests, besides base
ball games, tennis tournaments that
get exciting In the last rounds. Rest
hour alone makes the needed break
in the day. In the evening there
may be a story-telling hour around
the big campfire, a moonlight sing or
a star talk just before taps.

McCloud Returns to York.
York, Neb., July 26.—Mr. and Mrs.
C. A. McCloud are home after a seven
weeks' trip through the east by auto.
They attended both republican and
democratic conventions, and the Elks
convention, and Mr. McCloud looked
after business pertaining to his posi
tion as national committeeman for
the republican party for Nebraska.
