Wheat Moves Up Rapidly; Closes at New High Levels Indications That Foreigners, Becoming More Anxious, Buying Grain in U. S., Is Big Factor. Ily CHARLES J. LEYDEN. I niversa! Kerv ire Muff Correspondent. v* hie ago, July 25.—Led by Liverpool and Winnipeg, wheat prices in the local pit moved rapidly forward today to new highs on the crop, and closed at the best levels so far. Free profit taking came out on every bulge, but ws« gradually absorbed by the broad, speculative de mand. Indications that foreigners were becoming more noxious and that they were buying both cash and future wheat in this country and Canada was the big faotor of the day. Wheat closed l 1 ^r* to 2’*c higher: corn was “»r to 2I4C higher; oats were 40 to t V advanced, and rye ruled l^c to 1*40 higher. Winnipeg showed much greater strength than Chicago relatively, and closed for the July at a premium of 13%t.—the highest so far. Liverpool sprung a surprise by advancing 2% pence, despite tne late break in the North American markets Of the previous day. Cables from there ssid there was evident a gradual strengthening in the cash situation. Corn encountered a much better class of support. A local trader wluuwas sell ing out long wheat on a big scale Bought about as much of the corn. The mid-j month government report on com showed conditions backward over wide areas of the belt. Un the upturns heavy profit inking sales came out, but the dote was substantially higher for the day. Oats advanced well wilu othxi grains. Hi rung commission house buying was noted, while offerings were scarce except on the hard spots. A much better class of buying entered the rye pit. The bullish Russian ami Canadian crop reports ns regards rye have been gradually attracting more buy eis iu 1 he pit. Provisions were again active and buoy ant. Lard was 160 to 2fic higher, and ribs were 10c to 3Uc higher. Pit Notes. Reports from the Canadian northwest persisted to the effect that rust, was present in Manitoba and was apparently spreading. Private ortvice* from Winni peg. which until recently hud been in - 1 lined to minimize the damage already •lone the wheat crop, were more, pessim istic, and the tendency was to revise downward previous estimates. The fact that Winnipeg showed greater strength 1 hau Chicago proved that the crop situa tion in that country is precarious. There were repot t credited to accepted authorities in Canada, that it would take inother month t • > determine the actual outcome of the Canadian crop, but It is admitted that, ’.he crop there is very late snd will surely encounter fro 1 later on unless conditions remain favorable for the rest of the summer. Further com plaints were heard of the lark of rain fall in Australia. The country sold considerable wheat and hedging sales were noted, but ao far this class of selling has had no last ing effect in the trend. Cash wheat prices in all markets were up sharply with the futures, and there were reports that busi ness in wheat and rye flour was broaden ing. The primary movement was still below last year. The price of wheat in the United Slates Is regarded as cheap at the moment com pared with surplus grain of other coun tries. It seems Inevitable that Europe v ill have to come to this country sooner or Inter and take what big requirements Mho needs. The shipments of wheat from the Argentine are gradually diminishing. India is not shipping any wheal t<» speak ,,f. There is really no other country that has «ny great amount of Wheat to sell 1 Ht this time or will have for several months except I he United States The Hade her** is looking for a much broader export trade to devedop almost any time. By RISHARI) RPILUM! Universal Hrrvlcf Finumlal Iditon. New York, duly 25.—The coalers were favorites on the stork exchange today. It is h long, long time since there was such jC volume of dealings In their shares or when so many of them made scuch advances. If there was any leader it was Lehigh Valley. There whs a turnover In this one property of nearly 60,000 shares. They m 11 had good advances rang ing from one-half in Heading to four point* in Central of New .Jersrv. Some of the roppers continued their advance. Utah whs particularly strong. Cerro ds Pasco waa heavily traded in. but didn't fluctuate much. The rubbera, aa a. rul*. fared well. The oils were not prominent The sugars did very well. Evidently those in high circle? think the sugar business Is on the mend. American Beet waa up 1 S*e. t Sears Roebuck and Montgomery Ward • gain advanced. The dealings In Mont gomery Ward continue heavy. Bethlehem Steel naturally was weak. The passing of the dividend was some thing of a shoek. because of assurances from "good" sources that the dividend would be paid. United States Steel waa off S of a point. Wilson & Co. common and preferred declined heavily on reiteration of the re port that the corporation was going Into receivershin. There whs prompt depial from Chicago but the denial was not ac cepted fully. At any rate Wilson common went off 2*4 points and preferred 5% points. Transact, ons for the day aggregated 1,016.000 shares 4 4 Hails advanced on an average of * 10 of a point ' Industrials advanced on« an average !* of ik point. ...» Foreign exchange we* lower, sterling be ing down ®sj of h cent. French francs 4 V* points and lire ** of s point, feronoy whs easy. Tht grain markets were more orderly than has been the case recently Every thing went un. hut not setjaationallj. There was a continuation of the heavy realising which of late haa characterised the market, but there was proof aplenty of a egparltv to absorb all of it. So soon a* this realizing whs out of the way, the advance waa resumed. The trend of prices through the day was upward. Wheat < losed from 1’♦ to 1 \r un. corn from \ to 2N|C up. and oats from >* to m c up. Pork produ* ts again were higher. There was h moderate decline in cot ton. News of rain in Texas brought sell ing under which prices broke rather sharply and at the close the decline for tho dav waa from 4!» to 65 points.
