Thrilling Sport
Cane Poles Baited With Live
Frogs Used on State
Lakes.
One of the thrilling sports on the
Cherry county lakes, which are
thronged with fishermen just now, is
angling for the big five and six-pound
bass with cane poles in the middle of
the day.
While the sun pelts down its hot
test rays big bass are wont to retire
to the cod depths beneath the shade
of tlie moss beds. At frequent inter
vals in the moss beds are open cis
terns of clear water from 15 to 20
feet in diameter. It is impossible to
cast an artificial bait successfully in
these cisterns or to secure a raise if
one does, so the artful fisherman
drifts up near the edge, without sound
of oarlock or splash of paddle, and,
reaching over with a long cane pole,
gently lowers a live frog toward the
rc bottom. The wiggling of the frog
arouses the bass.
One in Five Lucky.
The fisherman Is lucky If he lands
one strike in five, on account of the
moss and lack of room and line to
play the catch, but it is exciting, and
occasionally a boat tips over.
The big onee are biting freely in
the open water and In the shade of
the canes and rushes In- the early
morning and at night, and some dandy
catches are being made. At Ballard's
lake. In Cherry county, four fisher
men caught a string of 60 bass,
ranging in weight from four to five
and one-half pounds. Good catches
also are being reported from Marsh,
Trout, Red Deer, Willow, Twenty
One, Rat and Beaver lakes, and also
from Enders lake, SO miles south of
Ainsworth, in Brown county.
Chicken Crop Good.
The grouse and chicken crop this
fall is going to be a good one if
Koster's men can keep the game hoge
from knocking them over now. At
present the birds vary in size from
meadow larks to young pigeons, and
they are not yet strong and swift
enough on wing to escape even a
mediocre shooter.
Birds at present are abundant, as
are young ducks of all varieties.

are leaving the city for the lakes of
the north or the mountains of the
west, while others are visiting east
ern cities.
Advices from resorts of northern
Iowa and Minnesota indicate that
never before have the resources of
these places been taxed to entertain
as many people. Places largs and
small are reporting that everything
available Is booked for the remainder
of July and requesting correspondents
to please send In reservations for
August as soon as possible.
Estes Park and other Colorado re
sorts will see a great many auto par
ties from Nebraska and Iowa. Al
though surpassed In soms vacation
ists’ minds by the lakes, mountain
country will always hold a charm for
the man or woman who lives In the
plains country.
N. P. Dodge Family at Home

N. P. Dodge of Omaha has re
modeled the Dodge summer home at
Clear lake, preparatory to spending
his summer vacation there.
Miss C. O. Dodge, his sister, will be
with him this summer at Clear lake.
The Dodge cottage occupies the
most prominent place on the lake,
having been constructed on the point
of land which extends farthest into
the waters of the lake. All the Dodge
property at Clear lake, with the ex
ception of the cottage of the family
Itself, has been sold to other vacation
ists on which to build summer homes.

One Hundred. Lakes in Single County
Stocked Wtih Gamey, Hard-Biting Fish
Glenwood, Minn., a little city of
2,500 population, boasts that it is the
gateway to the 10,000 lakes of Minne
sota. Pope county, in which it is
situated, has over 100 lakes wdthin the
county lines.
The lakes are stocked with gamey,

northern pike, crappies and other
