If La Follette makes good the pre
llctions of his followers In carrying
inly Wisconsin, Minnesota and the
Iwo Dakotas, It will give him 35
Votes in the electoral college. An
iven fairly close election between
Davis and Coolidge might turn the
trick and prevent either from ob
taining the required 266, leaving La
^ Follette the balance of power. In
^ Ihts case, the twelfth amendment to
the constitution provides the house
(hall proceed to elect a president "be
tween the three highest candidates,"
Voting not as 435 Individual members
but as state units, making 48 votes
in all.
More Confusion.
Here again would be confusion.
Neither republicans, democrats or In
dependents actually control the
bouse.
The republicans control 23 states,
Equivalent to 23 votes.
The democrats control 20 states,
Equivalent to 20 votes, and five states
are tied, there being an equal number
Of democrats and republicans In the
state delegations.
Thus, If party lines held, the house
could not elect a president, for the
1 constitution specifies that the winner
must have a majority—in this case
25 votes.
Unless the house Is able to elect
by March 4, the date of inauguration,
the whole matter goes to the senate,
which would proceed to elect one of
the two vice presidential candidates
to the White House. In the senate
the voting would not be by stall's,
but by individuals.
The present senate is composed of
51 republicans, 43 democrats and 2
farmer-labor friends of Senator La
Follette.
Majority Doubtful.
While there is a seeming republican
— majority in the senate, actually it
scarcely can be said to exist, because
it includes such senators as La Fol
lette himself, Brookhart of Iowa,
Norris of Nebraska, Norbeck of South
Dakota, Frazier of North Dakota,
Howell of Nebraska and others whose
legislative leanings are toward the ,
Wisconsin senator rather than to
ward party regularity.
Who might emerge out of this
weird maze of entanglements as the
winner of the 1924 election is pure]
speculation. Authorities on the con
stitution themselves say they do not
know.
After this stage is reached the con
stltutlon la vague and ambiguous. It
makes no provision whatsoever for
how the president should be chosen
should the senate fall down on the
|ob and It Is even vague a,i to whether
V vice president elected by the senate
in such manner is merely the presi
dent pro tern or whether he Is en
titled to a regular four-year term.
The supreme court might have to
take a hand in It and interpret the
ccnstitution.
Only twice in American history has
a presidential election been thrown
Into the house. In 1801 the house
elected Thomas Jefferson over Aaron
Burr after a bitter fight that lasted 36
ballots. Adam* was elected over
Jackson In nimilar circumstances.

Tests Planned to Determine Drug
Administered to Branded Pastor
Battle Creek, Mich., July 14.—
ASedlcal teste were to be made to
day on the Rev. Oren C. Van Loon,
"KICK" branded Berkeley, Mich.,
minister, to learn what powerful drug
was given him during the 11 days of
mystery while his mond became a
blank and memory slipped from him.
Mr. Van Loon disappeared June 80.
He still lies In a bewildered condi
tion at the Nichols hospital here fol
lowing his collapse on the street last
Friday.
Fears have been expressed by his
physician, Dr. A. F. Kinsley, that the
experiences of those hidden days
would never be remembered.
“It’s exactly as though he had been
under an anaesthetic for that length
of time,” Dr. Kingsley said. "He
can no more remember what trans
spired In that period than a patient
can know what took place on the
operating table.
Symptoms of Drugs.
“I have examined carefully for
j skull fractures or bruises but he has
suffered no such injury. He show's
the symptoms of drugging and as
he regains his strength we wdll
endeavor to determine what drugs,
If any, were administered to him."
While memory of the mystery day
Is gone, subconscious knowledge of
them Is torturing the minister’s mind
as his wracked body was likely tor
tured when the burning brand was
seared across his shrinking shoulders
Fitfully, In his sleep he murmurs
to himself about "those men." Again
he cries out, “don’t let them hurt
me,” Again his limbs contract. Hla
knees bend and hi* face twitches In
pain. Furrows of agony deepen his
sun-burned forehead.
The head against the pillow Is al
most white, a striking contrast to
the brown of his face.
According to his wife, much of that
silver has appeared since he left his
home In Berkeley, June SO.
A ray of light straggled Into the
darkness of his memory for a mo
ment yesterday. Perplexedly he put
his hand to hla forehead as he tried
to remember.
"I got Into an automobile with a
stranger, a man In a Ford. No it
wasn’t a stranger, it was some one I
knew. He drove up to me as I was
waiting for the car from Berkeley to
Royal Oak and offered to give me a
lift. We got out at the bank in Royal
Oak. I came out. I was waiting for
a atreet car”—and he stopped. Tears
came Into his eyes and he hid his
face In the pillow.
"Aren’t you going to try to solve
the mystery of your disappearance
and branding?” he was asked.
He shook his head and smiling,
said:
“I don't want to know. My ef
forts to learn what Is responsible for
this"—reaching backward toward the
weird "KXK” on his shoulder—
"would mostly create more enemies.
God knows there Is sufficient strife
and dissension and separation among
Christians. That Is why I preached
against the burning of the cross. I
want to bring those misguided men
and women Into peace and harmony.
I want them to know that the cross
of Christ Is the emblem of unity,
not of separation."

Overcoming Difficulties
in Every State.
Chicago. July 14—Robert M. La
Follette'a namt can and will De placed
on the presidential ballots of every
state. Congressman John M, Nelson,
national campaign manager for the
Wisconsin senator, declared today
after receipt of reports of a prelimi
nary survey by the newly announced
legal corps with representatives In
each of the 43 states.
"It Is true the altuatlon atlll pre
eents difficulties," Nelson said, "but
I feel certain we can solve them.
West Virginia offers perhaps the
hardest problem because of the earl'

financing the Da Toilette campaign
with contributions of one day's pay

Entire City in Darkness ^hen
Turbine Switch Is
Struck.
Fremont, Neb.. July 14.—Fremont
was thrown Into complete darkness j
Friday, when a bolt of lightning1
■truck a smokestack on the city light
plant and shattered one of the big
turbine twitches.
Chief Engineer Lon Wright stated
that a ball of fire eeemed to travel
down tho chimney Into the plant. The
shock of the bolt was felt throughout
the central part of the city.
Those on the etreet at the time re
ported that the clouds above were a
mass of whirlpools and for a few
moments It seemed as If a cyclone
was about to strike.
The damage at the light plant was
not serious and by morning, the darn
aged turbine had been repaired.
