Kathleen McKane Defeats Helen Wills for Wimbledon Tennis Title Des Moines Breaks Omaha’s Winning Streak of 15 Straight Games _ ■ » English Girl’s Victory Marked J by Daring Play Stroking From Close to Net Enables Winner to Cap ture Championship— Wins Two of Three. By A—acflttl Pmw. Wimbledon. Eng.. July 4— Miss Helen Wills. American woman lawn tennis champion, was defeated today in the Wimbledon tournament final by Miss Kathleen McKane. ranking British woman player, who won 4-6, 6-4, 6*4, capturing the tournament championship in the woman’s sin gles. Miss McKane. by defeating Miss Wills in a three-set match in which the honors were 'almost evenly di vided. attained the title which Mile. Suzanne Lenglen of France had held against the opposition of the world since the war. The slight advantage which the English girl held over her American rival was in the more deadly strok ing from close tp the net. It was this that enabled her to win the championship. The real margin be tween the two players seemed to He in the fact that Miss McKane was audacious while Miss Wills was cauti ous. From first to last the pace was tre mendously keen. Miss Wills wag far speedier both with racquet and with foot than she did on any previous ap pearance in Great Britain, but she was not as quick-limbed as the slim mer built Miss McKane who, because Miss Wills failed to smash hard at the net, was able to pick up many of the American’s volleys. The English girl, on the contrary, usually put points In her favor with hard ungettable swipes at the ball whenever she caught It near the net. From back court to mid-court there was little to choose between the two players. Both stroked hard and with good atm. the duel varying from back hand tcf forehand with each chasing the other unmercifully. Tristate Game | r Ends in Wrangle Sioux Falls. S. D.. July 4 — Nobody seems to know just how this after noon's game between Sioux Falls and Hastings resulted. It ended in a row after an argument developed over a discussion of what would have been the tying score at 7 apiece. * Umpire Meyers called a Sioux Falls man out at the plate and then changed his decision, ruBng him safe. Hastings protested and finally Mey ers walked out of the park saying that the game was tied at 7 all and he was through for the day. Later, at his hotel, he told the official scorer that the Sioux Falls man was out and the score should have been 7 to G in favor of Hastings. Still later, he told Manager Frank Doyle of Sioux Falls that the game had ended a 7-7 tie. The play would have been the third out. Meyers will make his report to President Grotte tonight. Meanwhile the result remains in doubt, as he has made contradictory statements. Sioux Falls outhit the visitors in the morning game and won, 6 to 3.
