Wisconsin Senator Decides to
Run on Independent
Ticket.

Cleveland, O., July 3.—The personal
campaign of Senator Robert M. La
Follette, republican of Wisconsin, as
an Independent candidate for tho
presidency will be fought chiefly over
tho radio, It was learned here today.
Because of hla age, La Follette has
Informed his managers that he in
tends to make few long trips and to
make most of his personal appeals
for votes over the air. La Follette's
headquarters will be In Chicago.
This news, transmitted privately to
day to leaders of the conference for
progressive political action which will
endorse La Follette for the presi
dency, settled definitely the question
of whether the militant Wisconsin
progressive would enter the race.
The convention managers have been
assured all along that La Follette
would be a candidate, but It was not
until today that the plans for the
campaign that will be carried Into !
every state in the country were for
mally made known.
Plans Speaking Tour.
For the early part of the cam
-^paign La Follette Intends to remain
i In Washington. Later he expects to
go to his home in Madison, Wis.,
from where he will make short jour
neys Into neighboring states, particu
larly the Dakotas and Minnesota, pos
slbly Illinois, Iowa, Ohio and Indiana.
As the campaign settles down In the
home ctretch his managers declared
that La Follette would speak in the
larger cities of the nation, going
straight Into the heart of the sections
which political observers believe ordi
narily would swing Into the republi
can or democratic columns—the east
and the south.
His leaders here confidently pre
dict that If the democrats name a
conservative In New York La Follette
will be able to capture Pennsylvania
and some of the so-called border states
along the Mason-Dixon line, although
La Follette is expected to Issue a per
sonal statement making It quite plain
that he Is opposed to the hooded or
ganlzatlon.
La Follette managers, headed by '
Representative John M. Nelson (re
i publican) of Wisconsin, Insurgent
leader In the house, claim as already
‘‘In’’ practically all states west of the
Mississippi , river. Only California
they hold to be doubtful. Walter
Thon.as Mills of the farmer-labor
party of California, however, pre
dicted the state would go to La Fol
lette in November. This, he thought,
! would he possible through an expected
announcement by Senator Hiram
Johnson, republican of California,
* dint the La Follette candidacy would
be acceptable to him.
Demos May Help.
Help also Is expected from such
demnrrnta In the senate as Dill of
Washington and Wheeler of Montana,
vthom La Follette supported In their
campaigns.
> The enthusiasm for La Follette here
is almost unbounded. The leaders of
■ the conference, which has only two
main things to do—endorse La Fol
lette and adopt a platform which he
will draft—are past the stage of pre
dieting that the Wisconsin senator
will merely throw the presidential
election Into the house.
. A leader can't he found here who
won't say that La Follette has more
than an even chance to win and that
ho will carry into office with him
(enough progressives to tie the legis
lative hands of both old parties in !
congress.
JAPANESE ELDER
STATESMAN DIES

Toklo, July 2.—Prince Masayoshi
Matsukata, one of the two genro, or
elder statesmen of the Japanese em
pire, died this evening. He was 89.
Matsukata returned to Toklo about
two months ago, much recovered
| from the serious Illness which caused
ihis death to be reported last March.
At that time, after the physicians
had pronounced him dead and the na
( tion had gone into mourning, the
« former premier slowly revived.

STATE LAND VALUE
$2,400 PER CAPITA
If Nebraska land was evenly dis
tributed every citizen in the state
would own approximately $2,400 in
real estate, according to figures com
piled by the Omaha Chamber of Com
merce puhlicity committee. The only
state to come near Nebraska in per
capita realty wealth is Iowa, with a
per capita real estate valuation of
$2,172.
In per capita wealth Nebraska Is
seventh in the country with an aver
age of $4,004, which is 25 per cent
higher than the average for the coun
try. The total wealth of the state as
computed by the Chamber of Com
merce is $5,320,075,000. Nebraska Is
fifth in livestock production and
eighth in value of farm machinery
and only thirty-first in population.
Nebraska is one of three state to be
without a state debt.

At the time she left, McAdoo senti
ment was strong with much talk of
Davis as a compromise candidate. She
expressed astonishment at failure to

Chicago, July 3.—Between 300 and
500 automobiles were destroyed with
an estimated damage of $200,000 by
fire early today, when the La Salle
Automobile company’s storage ware
house was burned. The structure oc
cupied an entire block.

45 Years.
Mrs. Emma Black, 7G, for 43 years
a resident of Omaha, died Wednesday
night at the home of her daughter,
Mrs. Aurora La Violette, 2447 South
Twentieth street.
She first moved to Omaha 45 years
ago and settled at Nineteenth and
William streets. Later she moved
to Bellevue, where she still held in
terests until her death, but during
her advancing years she moved back
to Omaha in order to be nearer her
children.
Mrs. Black is survived by her
daughter and two sons, Edward
Black, reporter for The Omaha Bee,
and Hector B. Black, and 10 grand
children. Edward Black Is now on
his way home from California. He
will arrive Friday night.
Funeral services will be held Sat
urday afternoon at 1 from the Lar
kin chapel. Kev. J. M. Wilson will
officiate. Burial will be in Prospect
Hill cemetery.

Moore funeral home.
Mr. McCombs lived In Omaha for
16 years before he moved to Ains
worth. He Is survived by his widow,
Mrs. Effle J. McCombs; three broth
ers, J. Kelly McCombs of Omaha, W.
W. McCombs of Omaha and John H.
McCombs of Seattle, and one sister,
Mrs. James McDowan of Pittsburgh.
Burial will be at the Mount Hope
cemetery.
