Today r Sabbath Politics. McAdoo Still Strongest. California in Summer. $210.0(H)MO a Year. ^By ARTHUR BRISBANE^ It was a busy New York Sabbath for the politicians and the states men. Statesmen, you know, are candi dates for the presidency. And politicians are the practical men that handle the candidates, as the owner of game cocks handles his birds in the fight. They, the politicians, decide on the man whom the unimportant people are to elect. The dark horses were the cheer ful ones yesterday. It seemed clear that the two leading candidates, A1 Smith and McAdoo, must kill each other off. That is, it seemed clear to all dark horses. McAdoo and his crowd were as confident as ever. Rightly or wrongly, they are convinced that A1 Smith’s nomination is absolutely impossible, entirely apart from Mc 1 Adoo. They believe that Smith’s backers know it, although Smith does not. And they believe that when the Smith men get ready to deal, they will come to McAdoo. Without question, McAdoo is the candidate with the following now, among delegates and among the voters. His big strength with labor, not merely union men, but all work ers, is admitted by every politician. When men break away from their own man they go to the one with the most strength, not wanting a loser for their second choice. That is whflt makes the McAdoo i crowd hopeful. j On the other hand, Al Smith is ! among the ablest politicians in the \ country. He has learned politics from the cradle, as a Scotch golf professional learns golf. He knows every politician in the coemtry. He has done a thousand favors for every big boss. He can make any promise he chooses, in the name of Wall street, and the prom ise will be kept. , You know it is not easy to beat experience and money combined. If it were not for the power of William Jennings Bryan in any con vention, Smith might accomplish what a majority of the delegates, including 99 per cent of southern delegates, believes to be impossible. Bryan will fight Smith to the death, politically speaking. So much for politicians. Nothing real will be known for several days. A Berlin scientist has fourid and isolated the germ that causes foot and mouth disease. That news will be worth many millions to this country, directly, and billions per haps, indirectly. It is reported, although for tunately not proved, that agitators in the west have purposely spread foot and mouth disease by means of dogs and otherwise. California is a bad state in which to play a game of that kind. The perpetrators would find it more dangerous than horse stealing in Texas in the olden days. By the way, the people should know that all restrictions on auto mobiles going in and out of Cali fornia are entirely removed. That difficulty is part of past history.' And everybody with an automo bile should remember also that Cal ifornia is not only a wonderful win ter resort, but more especially a wonderful and unexcelled summer resort. Start west from anywhere in the United States. Then travel along the magnificent thousand miles of road from San Diego up to Seattle. It is a whole education, m lesson in patriotism that every man able to do so should give to his family. The total debt of the United States, of which you owe part, is $21,000,000,000, plus a few hun dred millions. On* year ago it was $1,009,000,000 more. The difference is due to Mellon, the secretaiy of the treasury. At the rate he is going, our debt will entirely disappear in 15 years. That’s business. Incidentally, those interested in democratic candidates may remem ber that part of the economy was made possible by W. G. McAdoo. When he was secretary of the treas ury, he annoyed many big financiers by stabilizing the interest rate on government bonds at 4*4 per cent. They demand 6*4, but he said “no.” That 1 per cent saved by him on a debt of $24,000,000,000 amounted to $240,000,000 a year. Whether McAdoo is elected presi dent or not, one thing is sure, he has earned bis salary several times over. Some big men would love McAdoo more if he had let the government pay 5*4, thus raising interest rates everywhere. Berlin announces the sending of pictures, accurately done by wire less. That makes you believe in scientific miracles. It’s more won derful than the old Bagdad story of the virtuous shoe maker with one eye. You remember he was able to move the mountain, because, obeying the Bible, he had torn out one of his eyes to rebuke it for having looked too long at the well turned ankle of a young lady. Faith to rip out the eye that Hhd offended gave him strength to move the mountain. Read about it next Sun day in Marcopole’s travels. Very edifying. Mallory and Ervine, heroic ex plorers, are killed by a monsoon, close to the top of Mount Everest. The old mountain again triumphs, y*,ut it won't do so always. ■ - That highest peak on earth will yield to man, ns everything else on this planet, will yield. There will be an astronomical observatory up there some day, men going up com fortably in their flying machines, and manufacturing, up there, any kind of atmosphere that they w»nt. <- (Copyright, lllt l ' -y 111 ■ —- ■■■■■■ - ■■■ .. ■ ■.■"-nr* f I Tuesday-Continuing Our Record-Breaking | SALE HOME NEEDS *>* i| Priced Specially for Tuesday |||j These Fine Rugs and Linoleums 1 The experienced buyers will appreciate the remarkable values to be had through the Brandeis Rug Department.
