- ENVER. June IS.—
Art Griggs’ Omaha
Buffaloes were slow
in starting this
afternoon, but when
they got started
there wasn’t any
thing to the gams
but Buffaloes, for
the visitors rallied
in the seventh In
ning, drove one
pitcher to cover
and hit the second
hurler hard, win
, ning the second
game of the series by the score of
12 to I. It was one of the worst
beatings the Denver club has suffered
on its own lot this season.
The Buffaloes had their hitting togs
on all afternoon, although they could
not get situated until the seventh.
Denver was leading Omaha, 3 to 0,
when Omaha came to bat in the
seventh. Omaha started pounding
Freeman and before the side had been
retired he was en route to the show
ers and Brown was on the hill get
ting a good beating. The Herd scored
eight runs in the fiftK*and then one
in each of the following innings.
Bill Bailey started for Omaha and
was hit for 11 safeties. The Bears
buncher their hits in the first inning
for a run and then again in the third
for two more runs. In the fifth in
ning. Roche's three-bagger enabled
tfie Bears to score three more. .
Nick Cullop, utility player for
Omaha, had his shoulder dislocated
when he was hit by a pitched hall
thrown by Freeman. Manager Art
Griggs replaced Cullop at first base.
Three home runB were clouted out
during the afternoon and it was the
Buffaloes who did the clouting. Rob
inson, OsboVne and Bonowltz who
slipped out circuit drives. Bonowitz
scored his 15th homer of the season.

Jones made a success
of himself
Many a man who is pointed out as a “self,
made man" keeps ahead by surrounding
himself with successes from which to draw
inspiration. And it’s just that type of man
who appreciates the virile character of La
Palina -the great cigar success. The fact that
over 800,000 La Palinas are lighted each
day proves that La Palina has made good.

Feature Race
at Ak Track
Jones Thoroughbred Over*
takes Peter Brown Baring
Down Stretch and
Wins.
Under leaden skys and on aetracg
fairly fast with half dried Nebraska !
gumbo, the thoroughbreds at Ak-Sar- f
Ben field began the lfith day of ran- f
ing in the spring meeting Wednesday
afternoon. 1
The first event was won by Ftnls
Glorious, who took It by a matter of
lengths and left an easy second place
to Blue Van, the horse which paid
the longest odds at the meeting, Him
dobstan showed easily.
The first race was hardly over
when Johnny Singleton brought his
newest acquisition, Kilkare, romping
home on top, in the second event.
Expressive had b»en picked by the
handioappers to take first honors,
with Collision selected to place. Col
listen placed, but Expressive was mis
laid somehow and barely managed to
contest the flying heels of the win
ner long enough to take third money.
Kilkare, son of Paiciness Miss Be
have, with his owner in the saddl*.
came away from the barrier in a good
position and never lost It. He was
on the track he liked, carrying the *
weight he liked and he was out to
win. ,
The winner paid $29 00 to win. $* 00
to place and $3.00 to show. Colli
sion paid $4 oq tr» place and $2 to *o
show. Expressive paid $2.SO to show.
The third event went to Alleden
When that stout-hearted horse got
away from the barrier nicely and r«- !
fused to he ruled from then on in. ‘
He galloped the five and one-half fur- "
Jongs, the distance of the race, in ’
good time and made the fast running
Rajah fight gamely to hold second I
honors. Korbly, trying hard, showed.
Go Foin, erratic actor of the Jones
stock farm stable, managed to g*t j
up and win the fourth event, the
feature race of the day. Away in
second place the big bay runner
chased Pete Brown, the pacemaker,
all of the way to the stretch. Peter
Brown found himself so hard pressed
that, despite the going, he set a
mighty pace and lasted to lose only
in the final stride. Tooters took an
easy third when Helen Cook tired
after showing good early speed
The winner paid $2.30 to win and
there was no place or show betting
Tom Owens, flashing member of
the F. C. Marmet stable which has j
previously refused to flash while in I
a race, came from far back in the
fifth event and beat out Jim Heffer
ing at the wire. Jim Heffering had
set the pace from the barrier and was
easing up for the final spurt when
Tom Owens, skillfully handled by
Jockey C. McCorkle, cam# tearing up
from th» rear.
Jim Heffering had tired from the *
heavy going and was unable to beat
off the winners challenge. Caunrel
showed.
Star Cloudy found the track to his
liking in the sixth event and simply
ran his own race from start to fin
ish. He won easily by more than a
length with Bill Head plowing along
In the rear to place and Double Van
| fighting every Inch of the way to he
satisfied in the end with the short
end of the purse.
The real race in the *vent was be
| 'ween Bill Head and Double Van in
; the stretch. These two vied for seo
■ ond honors and it was only Bill
I Head's gamenesa that kept his head
| out as he passed the wire. He won
second money by a neck.
Grandest copped first honors in the
closing event of the day. The track
had dried considerably and Title, an
exclusive mudder, showed once more
that he was particular as to the go
ing for him to run In and came home
a limping last.
General Bvng was second and Sea
Beach was third. Grandest and Gen
eral Bvng both started slowly and
ran their race In their own way.
Grandest was leading comfortably at
the end.
