Cause of Decrease in June Brides
Pouglss county marriage licenses
issued the first 1* days of June, 1923,
numbered 185. For the same period
of 1924 they numbered only 118, a
decrease of 47.
This fact was divulged Tuesday by
"Cupid" Stubbendorf, marriage license
clerk.
Simultaneously came a dispatch
from New York stating that a similar
falling off is noted there and is be
lieved to be due to the damp and
rainy weather. The marriage bug.

Hummer Is Carefree
Tile cold weather that had so near
ly cost Hummer the Hummingbird
hi* life lasted only a day or two.
It waa one of those cold spells that
once In a while happen even in the
early summer. As soon as it was past
Hummer forgot it. You know, it is
Just that way with most of the little
people of the Green Ko'reat and the
Green Meadows. Trouble that is over
isn't worth thinking about.
Two or three days later Mra. Hum
mer arrived, and there woe a great
twittering and darting about by Hum
mer to express hia Joy. To have seen
him you would have thought him
filled with nothing but love for his
little mate, lie appeared ao delighted
to' see her that he couldn’t contain
himself.
But Hummer the Hummingbird is
selfish, Jenny Wren says so, and she
ought to know. "He may be beauti
ful and wonderful and all that, but he
is the most selfish fellow I know,”
declared Jenny, as she watched Hum
mer darting about like a living jewel.
“Now Mr. Wren is worker. He does
a lot of the work in building bur
nest. Ho you think Hummer will help
Mrs. Hummer?” He Is glad to see her
now, but just ss soon as there in any
work to do you wonj find him
around. That fellow hasn’t a care in
the world, and what is more, he
dosn't want any. Selfish! He’s Just
plain selfish! Tut, tut, tut, tut! It is
disgraceful!”
It would seem that Jenny Wren
was right Having chosen a place for
her nest way out near the tip of a
branch of one of the apple trees. Mrs.
Hummer started to hunt for material
for that dainty little nest. She was
very particular. Some folks would
say she was fussy. That nest must be
of ttie very softest material she could
find. It was to he a* soft as the soft
est down. Nothing else would do. So
she darted about, here, there and
everywhere, looking for the soft, cot
tony material that certain plants have
In the spring and early summer.
Moat of it she got from ferna.
But not once did Hummer help her.
He spent his time hunting for favor
ite flowers or in preening his beautl
fsl little feathers. He didn't appear
Of coureft, Mr*. Hummer didn't work
•very minute
to he Interested in what Mr* Hum
mer wa* doing. Perhaps *he whs used
10 it. Anyway, she kept very busy
and paid no attention to Mr. Hum
mer. And »o that tiny nest, the small
est home of *11 the feathered folk,
gradually took shape like a fairy cup
of aoft cotton.
Of course Mr*. Hummer didn’t
work every minute. .She had to* eat.
In fact, tiny a* the hummingbirds
are they must have plenty of food,
for you know' it i* food that gives
strength and what we tall energy.
And it take« a great deal of both to

An incomplete review of damage to
, Northwestern Bell Telephone com
! pany lines by the storm Saturday
night and Sunday shows over 400
poles down in South Dakota around
Sioux Falls, causing a damage of
from $5,000 to $7,000.
About $25 telephones ware put out
Of order In that aectton. In north
eastern Nebraska, 70 poles are down,
and It la possible the total will reach
200 when all damage reporta have
been received. Trouble In Nebraska
is being rapidly cleared up.
In Iowa, 548 poles are reported
down, with the heaviest damage be
tween I.emars and Hawarden. In
western Iowa, there were 182 cases
of trouble on long distance lines, but
most of this was cleared by Sunday
night. About 800 telephones were
put out of order In Western Iowa,
with most of the trouble at Council
I Bluffs, Atlantic and Hamburg.
