nesday afternoon
when the 10th
day’s program of
seven races was
held.
Nothing excit
ing happened
throughout the
afternoon. The
f a v o r i t es and
4 a e c o n d choices
. ' among the wise
acres managed to get down the mud
dy track to win. The prices paid
didn’t came any great glee on the
part of the ticket owners as the bet
ting was light and the crowd small.
The track, which was fast Tuesday
afternoon, got a drenching late Tues
day and the result was the bang-tails
had to “strut their stuff’’ in the goo.
. The first race brought out five
mudders for a four and one half fur
long struggle. Hapsburg Miss, tha
favorite, with Gamer In the saddle
moved up fast on the last turn and
overtook Runpreserve and Marie
Virginia. The two-year-old McClain
filly increased her speed coming down
the laet furlong and finished more
than a length In front of Marie Vir
ginia, while Runpreaerve, the Irwin
entry, waa easily third best. Runlcor
and Peggy Parks were far behind at
the wire.
One of those so-called tips went the
rounds on Menage in the sectfnd race
for five and one-holf furlongs and by
post tlma the Rogers thoroughbred
was choice with Pure Dee second best
among the wiseacres.
A field of seven answered the bugle,
but when Starter McKnight snapped
the barrier, Menage, the favorite,
failed to break and Jockey Harry
Garner and hla mount were left at
the post. Pure Dee. with Heupel up,
liked the going and was away first.
He opened up a big gap and coasted
home six lengths in front of Expres
sive, who raced in second position
from the start. The latter tried hard
to catch the leader coming down the
stretch, and made up a lot of ground
in hla attempt, but Pure Dee found
the track made for him. San !->tefano,
a 21.40 to 1 shot, finished in show,
five lengths behind Expressive.

Beats Van Ryan
_____
Lioux City, June 10.—Pinkey Mitch
ell, world's Junior welterweight cham
pion. took seven of 10 rounds and a
newspaper decision from Al Van |
Ryan. St. Paul, in a rain drenched j
ring, for the feature event of the
American Legion's boxing card here
tonight. It was the first outdoor
show of ttie season and a terrific
downpour greeted the large crowd.
Both fighters skidded about the
canvas a great deal, but Mitchell gave
a good demonstration and was ahead
most of the time. The champion was
especially strong at the end of the
bout.
