Twenty one members of the police department, dropped from the pov roll on May 13 by action of the city council, are to he restored to duty when funds and vacancies will per mit, and are to he given preference over others who may have applied. Twenty members of the Are de partment, as Indicated in a list sub mitted byr Fire Commissioner Butler, will lig dropped from the poyroll on June 15, and they, as in the case of the policemen, will be placed on a j)referred list for future additions to the Are force. These are salient features of a re port made by Commissioners John Hopkins, Joseph Koutsky and J. B. Hummel, serving as a special commit tee, to the city council Tuesday morn ing, anent the financial conditions of the police and fire departments, Riitlf>r Vote* "No.” CV»mmis8innf*r Butler cn.«t th* only dissenting: vote on roll rail for the approval of the committee’s report. Butler announced that next week he will submit another list of firemen for indefinite removal, adding that 20 will not suffice, to overcome the pros pective deficit. In his report to the council's spe cial committee Charles A. Salter, chief of the fire department, stated that he Is unable to say how he can operate the firs department with less than the present staff* of 326. He stated that any reduction will reduce the fire-fighting efficiency. Commissioner Butler figured a defi cit Of $45,000 if the fire department should be continued to the end of this year on its present basis. The committee reported the shortage would be nbout $35,000. Police Commissioner Dunn ex plained that before he made the selec tions of 2t policemen on May 13 he lequested Inspector of Police Pssnow ski, then acting chief, to prepare a list of 2S from which selections might be made. leaves Are Recommended. The committee reported that the police department would have salary deficit of $20,000 at the end of this year if the 21 men recently dropped should he restored. The report notes that dropping these men will not ab sorb all of the deficit. The commft tee informally recommended that any further deficit in the police depart ment steuld be met by leaves of ab sence without pay. The policemen and firemen who are affected by this action attended the meeting Tuesday morning. The die i missed policemen are considering taking their case to district court. And as a result,rClgrke G. Powell, commissioner of the Chamber of Com merce, has for several evenings been unable to tell whether he Is arriving at his own home or at some entirely different place. ' For the carnival Is to be held In the hack yard of the PoWell home at 521(1 Cass street, and, to use Powell’s own language, “you wouldn't know the old place." They have used many ran* of yellow paint as a means of obtaining “local" color for the affair, and have installed so many kinds of amusement devices that Coney island looks tame com pared to it, according to the commls sloner. Binderup Says Records Burned Plaintiff in $750,000 Film Suit Testifies From Memory. Attorneys for the JS film companies, defendants in the >750,000 film suit In federal court, Tuesday In their cross-examination of Charles Binder up, plaintiff, brought out that most of the checks representing receipt* and records of Binderup* huainess were missing. Binderup later declared that the rec ords were destroyed by fire. He testi fied from memory in regard to moat of them. Men high up In the New York film business were expected to be witness es for the defense. Among those present are: C. A. Hollah, Sidney Meyers, H. D. Graham,, J. Calvert, Charles Peavey and Charles Taylor. Tuesday began the third week of this suit. Binderup charges that these film companies conspired and refused to rent him films. John O’Neill from the Holy Sepulcher, Omaha, to O'Neill, the city which he founded, i* the purpose of the Gen. The meeting was addressed by Jer ry Howard, Omaha, who has been here since Friday, representing Oma hans interested in the project. It is proposed to rededicate the monument at this place September 20, the anniversary of the martyrdom of Robert Kmmett. T. V. Golden is president of the new organisation; M. F. O'Neill this year celebrates the semi-centennial of ils founding by Gen. John O’Neill, who colonized the county and homesteaded a portion of (he present townsite. SUTCLIFFE RITES DELAYED FOR SON The funeral of Mrs. Klise H. Sut cliffe. secretary to Federal Judge Wnodrough. Is being delayed until the arrival of the son, Jack, from San Antonio, Tex. She died Monday after a long illness. Mrs. Sutcliffe was born in Omsha and has lived here all of her life. Her husband, Frank Sutcliffe, waa secre tary to Judge Wood rough befor# lila dealh, and when he died some year* ago his widow carried on the work. The survivors are two sons.
