Tokio, May 31.—Several minor In
cidents Illustrate the growth of the
anti-American spirit throughout
Japan engendered by the passage of
t lie exclusion act by the American
congrese. Press dispatches from
Wakayama, a city some 40 miles from
Osaka, eay that the Toung Men's as
sociation of that town has passed a
resolution demanding the withdrawal
of the American missionaries from
that district. .
Three -women's organizations of
Tokio have passed resolutions urging
women not to buy American toilet
articles, while the press reports a
movement among Buddist and Shinto
leaders to bar Christianity from
Japan.
The majority of newspapers con
tinue to fan the flame of resentiment.
The Yomiri Shimbun says, “The sit
uation cannot produce war, but we
must draw away from America.
Hitherto we have always considered
America first in any International sit
uation. Now we must change that.
AVe are convinced the further we hold
aloof from America, the safer will be
for the peace of the orient."
The Nochl comments in the eame
strain, urging economic and diplomat
ic independence of the United States.
The Geisha organization of the NI
hombashl district of Tokio, the most
prosperous part of the city, has agreed
not to buy American toilet articles.
Publicists, journalists and former
officials have formed the “Taibei
Doshikai" (anti-American association)
to carry on a national agitation
against exclusion. The leaders In
clude Mitsura Toyama, an aged polit
ical agitator, who was imprisoned for
siding with the rebels in the civil war
of 1877; Kotaro Mochizuki, who was
in America during the Washington
conference and is a member of the
diet, and Shinkichi Uyesugl, a pro
fessor of the imperial university.
Dispatches to the Tokio newspapers
from Osaka indicate that the agitation
for a boycott of American goods Is
gaining ground in western Japan.
HERMAN DRISHAUS
DIES AT SAN DIEGO
Herman Drlshaus, 72, retired presi
dent of the Gath City Hat company,
died Friday at his home In San Diego,
Cal., of heart disease.
Born in Germany, Mr. Drlshaus
came to America when 17. After liv
ing a short time in Milwaukee he
came to Omaha. He was a resident
here for 35 years Mr. Drishaug* and
Alex Gunther started the Gdte City
Hat company, wholesale Jobbers in
hats, caps and gloves at Tenth and
Farnam streets. He retired from ac
tive business eight years ago and
made his home in San Diego.
* He Is survived by his wile; a son.
I.ester Herman Drlshaus, present
head of the company; a daughter, Mrs.
1. D. Josselyn, of San Diego, and a
granddaughter, Geraldine Josselyn.

Indiana, at a meeting in Indianapolis,
May 24, attacking “a few white
livered southerners who plan to sell
out our organization to the common
enemy and defeat all our men In No
vember.”
Aged Iron Moulder Dies.
James Wright, 80, resident of
Omaha for 40 years, died Friday
night at his home, 2777 Chicago
street. Hs was born In England and
was formerly an iron molder here.
Mr. Wright is survived by his wife,
Alma; a daughter, Isabelle Mary; two
sons, Philip and Paul.
Funeral services will he held Tues
day at 2 p. m.. with burial In Forest
Lawn cemetety.
Eugene Debs 111.
Terre Haute, Ind., May 31.—Eugene
V. Debs, socialist leader and often
time candidate for president on the
socialist party ticket, was removed
to a hospital In Chicago today. His
condition was reported serious. He
has been til at his home here of
heart trouble for several months fol
lowing a western speaking trip.
Sarazen to Wed.
New York, May 31.—A marriage
license was Issued today to Gene
Sarazen, golf champion, of Briar
Cliff Manor, and Miss Mary Henry of
Miami Beach, Fla. Sarazen gave his
age as 23. Miss Henry said the Is

performed June 10.

“First Time I’ve Been Here,” She Says,
“But Europe?—I’ve Seen It Thrice”
Miss Mabel Normand, motion pic
ture actress, arrived in Omaha on the
Overland Limited from New York
Saturday morning, much the worse,
as she explained, from the fact that
the car wheels directly under her
stateroom made sleep difficult.
She descended sleepily from the
train to the platform, where Mayor
Dahlman was waiting with a large
bouquet of roses.
“This,” said Steve O'Brien," Miss
Normnnd's manager, “is Mayor Dahl
man."
Sensational Kntry.
"I’m glad to' know you, mayor,"
replied Miss Normand.
The parly then departed for a
specially built automobile which was
to convey Miss Normand to Hotel
Fontenelle, led by a squad of police,
which included Segt. W. D. Carney.
Mayor Dahlman followed, still carry
ing the flowers.
Having reached the entrance of the
hotel. Mayor Dahlman excused him
self and, the bouquet of roses in her
arms, Miss Normand made a sensa
tional entrance into lobby, where she
announced: "I like this hotel."
She and her companion. Miss June
Brew, repaired immediately to a suite
on the first floor. This suite was
formerly occupied by Eugene C. Ep
pley, owner of the hotel, and is a
choice one. A Jarge sign in the en
trance hall of the suite informed
Miss Normand that "AH Omaha Loves
You, Miss Nortnand."
A few minutes later six packages
of Egyptian clgarets werg delivered
at the suite. They were of an ex
pensive, cork-tipped variety.

"Miss Normand will go directly
from Oniajia to Los Angeles," said
her manager, O'Brien. who is a
former football player at Brown uni
versity. "She will begin making a
new picture immediately, called
'Mary Ann.' She is 2S years old. She
has bec-n making personal appear
ances in tlie east, where she has re
ceived wonderful .receptions. She will
begin appearing at the Sun theater
Sunday in person."

first street, took "French leave" last
Saturday night while Mr. and Mrs.
Putt were nt the Happy IIollow club.
She also took about J200 worth of
lingerie and other things, according
to the Putts. When they returned
from the club about midnight they
found their children, Richard, 2, and
Robert, 3 months, crying In fright.
Friday, they learned that Bertha
was working in the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Russell Fisher, 429 North Thirty
ninth street. Sne was arrested by
Police Detectives Franks and Wade.
She told Chief of Detective? Van
Deusen that another maid, employed
in a Dundee home, helped her re
move the goods from the I*utt home.
Mrs. Fisher told detectives she was
astonished at the fine lingerie worn
by her new maid, hut assumed it had
been given to her by some former
employer.
The girl came here from Stuart,
Neb., and had worked nt the Putt
home for three months.

why she departed so suddenly, leav
ing the two babies alone in the

Hanihara, acting on instructions from

Head of Producers’ Body
Tells of Co-Operalive
Work in Regulat

Residents' of Minneapolis, St. Paul
and vicinity are paying 10 cents per
quart for milk delivered and the
producers are earning more on their
investment than they e\-er did. This
lias been accomplished by the ap
plication of business methods and
organization, through the operation of
the Twin City Milk Producers’ as
sociation.
Those are some of the facta related
by IV. F. Shilling of Northfleld.
Minn., president of the association,
who arrived in Omaha Saturday to
address the Interstate Milk Producers’
association at the courthouse.
Shilling told the milk ’producers
that what lias been done in eight
years in his territory, can be done
here, through business methods.
Omahans are paying 11 cents for
milk delivered and the complaint of
the milk producers supplying this
district is that the distributors are
not paying them a ’’living wage” for
their products.
Surplus of Byproducts.
Control of surplus milk by manu
facturing It Into butter, cheese, con
densed milk, milk powder and other
byproducts, is one of the features of
the success of the Twin City associa
tion, said Shilling.
The association lias a membership
of 6,100 farmers, with paid up capi
tal of $600,000, surplus of $200,000.
and 15 plants, owned and operated
at a valuation of $500,000. East year
the association spent $20,000 advertls
lng milk. During.the last five years
this organization has increased the
consumption of milk 2S0 per cent In
the Minneapolis St. Paul territory.
Members of the association have s
co-operative agreement to sell their
milk at the best price obtainable and
they* do not send Into Minneapolis
or Bt. Paul any appreciable amount
of milk aboye the requirements. All
surplus Is disposed of at the associa
tion’s plants. •
Members Buy Stock
Each member is required to take
$50 stock for every four cows, pay
able on the basis of 5 per cent a
month from the sale of milk. He is
paid 6 per cent on his shares and
also enjoys the benefits of a steady
demand for his milk and a redueti<wi
of overhead expense.
Shilling also said a strike by the
milkers was never thought of.
“Just get together and apply busi
ness sense to your affairs and you
will learn that the solution rests with
you,” he said.

will live In Ilundee, where they are
building a home.
