Wheat Develops
Marked Strength
Closing at Top
Crop News From Scattering
Portions of Country Indi
cates Damage, Attract
ing Active Support.
By CHARLES J. LEYDEN.
Universal Service Staff Correspondent.
Chicago, May 13 —Wheat developed tnt
pressive strength today. moving Into
higher ground and closing at the top.
Crop newi from scattered portions «*f the
winter wheat belt indicated damage,
actual and prospective, and this together
with bullish views regarding require
ments for the balance of the reason at
tracted more active support as well as
short covering
Wheat closed %c to 1%0 higher, corn
was %c to %c up, oats were %c to Me
higher and rye ruled %c to %c up.
An accepted authority abroad aaid that
Euirupo would need 62,000,000 bushels
more wheat for the rest of the year
than hlw previous estimate indicated, or
about 160.000,000 bushels In all up to
August 1. The heavy buying of wheat
by Franca and Italy with expected «U
nmnd from central Europe led to the
raise In estimated requirements.
Corn showed & weak undertone a great
part of the day due to the continuation
of liquidation in May and the pressure
in the deferred months by locals. There
was good commission house buying on
the break and shorts In their ‘efforts
to cover which rallied prices sharply, the
May delivery however getting back only
Jts early loss.
Oats displayed firmness. Cash Interests
were .on both sides of the market while
commission houses took ’he bull side for
the most part.
Rye followed wheat higher. Export
sales have enlarged of late and there has
been support in the pit In the way of
removing hedges „ , _
Provisions were steady to firm. Lard
was 6c higher to 2%c lower, and ribs
were unchanged to 5c higher.
Pit Notes.
Wheat has fared very poorly in 1111
! nois this year, much having been plowed
up and sown to oats and oth*r grains.
The Illinois state report as of May 1
places the abundoned area at li per
oent. compared with 4.5 per cent a year
ag*>. The combined yields of Illinois.
Iowa. Ohio and Missouri promised to be
about 58,000,000 bushels short of last
year. Late in the day Kansas wired
that complaints of dry weather were
coming in. , ...
The foreign news attracted cumulate e
attention. For month! It has been
vagu-ly realized by the trade that Furope
hae been absorbing export grain at an
unprecedented rate, but the overwhelm
ing supplies more than counteracted the
demand. Now that balance between the
two is well adjusted, a broader idea of
the future needs of Europe is natural. A
Liverpool cable advised that the conti
nent was taking 8.000.000 bushels wheat
weekly direct and also was actively ab
sorbing “order” supplies.
The opinion is again voiced that foreign
crops the past year were over-esttmatecr
And with growing weather unfavorable
and crop growth backward In many of
the countries it is passoble that this
years production in Europe will show
1 a further decrease
I The Canadian visible supply for the
week decreased 5.856.000 bushels.^ De
sDite the record-breaking crop in Canada
i t&e Inst season, the visible total is now
but 27.000.000 bushels compared with 35.
000,000 bushels last year This Tndirect
ly indicates the surprising manner with
which Europe absorbed the Canadian crop
this season Th*re were intimations In
the trade that the differences between
Russia and Germany would divert the
German demand for foodstuffs. bossibl*.
more directly to North America The
Vnlted Kingdom cabled that offerings of
wh«*at from the Argentine and Canada
were again liberal.

New York Bonds
v-J
New York. May II.— Bond prices lagged
in today's desultory trading, which was
featured principally by heaviness of
French and .}apanese and Mexican issues,
reacting on political developments In
these countries Prices of domestic Hens
were variable and failed to establish a
definite trend.
Upsets in the French and Japanese
elections, which were reflected Immedi
ately in the action of the exchanges,
seemed to bring more general liquidation
of the bonds today French 7%s lost a
point and the new Japanese 6%s dropped
back to near the year's low level. The
controversy raging in Mexico City over
the terms of the debt' agreement and the
failure of the government to obtain a loan
contributed to decline- of a point or more
in Mexican government 4s and the 5 p« r ;
rent certificate*. Conspicuous weak spots j
In the domestic list were Ajax Rubber 8*. >
which dropped 3% points to 75% and I
Minneapolis A St Louis refunding 6*. ,
which fell back more than 2 points to 15, i
both new low prices for the year. Weak
ness of the Ajax bonds, however was,
not communicated to other rubber issue*, i
although shares of these companies
moved lower on fresh cuts in tire prices
Liberty bonds and railroad mortgage#
were shaded fractionally.
New financing today was well re
reived, recent dullness of trading, bank
ers asserted, indicated that listed market
was fairlv well drained of attractive se
curities and that the future demands
would have to be met by new offerings.
