pitchers were unable to turn back the
Boston team in a loose game played on a
field made soggy by two days’ rain. The
count was 10 to 7. Catcher Gooch of
Pittsburgh was ejected from the game
when he disputed a decision by Umpire

U. S. Davis Cup
Team Announced
New Tork, May 9.—It was an
nounced today by the United States
Lawn Tennis association that R. Nor
ria WlHiams. Vincent Richards, Fran
cis T. Hunter and Watson Washburn
had been selected as the lawn tennis
team to represent America in the
Olympic games at Paris this summer.
Williams will act as team captain,
it was stated.
William T. Tllden II, national
champion, was not considered for the
squad, owing to his announced resig
nation from all American teams be
cause of the passage of the player
writer rule by the national associa
tion. Richards, who joined Tilden in
his stand, only to reconsider his resig
nation at the solicitation of the Davis
cup committee, was one of the first
nominations ’'"errtl, however.
No effort was made to couple the
four men Into doubles combinations,
but tt is understood that Williams
and Washburn will team up as part
ners and that Richards and Hunter
will do likewise. The brunt of the
singles play will fall upon Williams,
Richards and Hunter.
The personnel of the squad assures
America of much sounder representa
tion at Paris than was thought pos
sible some weeks ago.
Williams is No. 3 in the singles
ranking and was a member of the
winning Davis cup doubles team.
Richards Is No. 4 in the list, while
Hunter reached the finals sgainst Bill
Johnston at Wimbledon laat year and
was a semi-finalist in the national sin
gles championship.
Final selection of the team was an
nounced by the Davis cup committee
of the United States 1-awn Tennis
association after Richards, who has
been employed by a news agency to
cover the Olympics, wa* given a
week's leave of absence, which will
permit him to play at Paris in con
formant with ths Olympic player
writer rule. Richards recently with
drew this resignation from ths team
when assured his status would be
cleared
