Robert D. Towne says religion is
handicapped by “lack of good
news.” There are no more firm as
surances, such as the one given to
Peter and Andrew, “follow me
and I will make you fishers of
men,” there are no definite asser
tions about hell, if you are wicked,
and heaven if you behave. Clergy
men split hairs, each one believes
part and denies part. The simple
mind wants to believe everything.
Perhaps a few Sniracles would
help to revive faith and fill the
churches. Suppose the Rev. Dr.
Straton should say: “I warn you
dissenting clergymen that you are
all bound for perdition and to prove
it I shall now change Dr. Jones
into a stick of candy." Would not
that convert all, if Dr. Jones did
stiffen up and slowly turn into
striped peppermint?
You’d think so, but the human
heart is hard. You remember the
Arabian philosopher, who said to
^Vie holy man: “You may say to
-,iie, twice two are five, and to prove
it I’ll turn this walking stick into
a live serpent, but even if you
change your stick into a serpent.
I'll still say, that is interesting, but
twice two are not five.”
Chicago is to have a champion
hotel, for bigness, at least. Two
thousand, two hundred and sixty
eight rooms, cost, including real es
tate and furniture, $40,000,000.
Such will be the new Polmer House.

the old Palmer House was new.
George M. Pullman and John W.
Doane went to see a fire started in
one of the rooms to prove fire re
sistance and everybody admired
the intellectual colored man. He
took you hat and coat, did the same
for 500 others, -never gave out
checks, but gave back the right
things to each man. He could re
member hundreds never seen be
fore and what belonged to them.
Europe, rudely ridiculing and
perhaps secretly envying American
“bigness,” will read these figures
with amazement. You could change
your room every day for six years
in that hotel, never occupying the
same room twice. The specifica
tions include four miles of cor
ridors and three and a half miles of
window glass.
And even that will sf-em small
one day, when the world becomes
overcrowded, and we go to the up
per stories of hotels by helicopter,
' —.titing nitrogen taken from the air
around the top floor.
Some Britishers are Intelligent,
which protects them, and the oth
ers. James Brown, plain coal miner,
who lived in a two-room Scotch
cottage, is appointed lord high com
missioner of the general assembly
of the Church of Scotland by the
labor government. That high
honor was previously held by the
duke of Athol and others of high
lank.
Snobs and fools had planned to
boycott the "common workman" so
cially, when he should make his of
ficial appearance. But the duke of
Athol invites John Brown to be his
guest. The duchess of Athol has
offered to teach Mrs. Brown the
ropes, and the marchioness of Ailsa
will be her lady in waiting. That
is how the British peerage hangs
on.
The British government, to in
crease the number.of flying men,
will back the young men's flying
cltios near big cities.
When young men start a club the
government will lend them “light
two seater” flying machines and
send men to teach them flying.
Our government might taka the
hint. Sending young men to train
ing camps is a good idea. But in
future war, one man taught to fly,
drop bombs and work a machine
gun from the air, would be worth
1,000 young men taught to parade,
present arms, etc. Ten thousand
first-class fliers, with a machine for
each, would make this nation abso
lutely safe against invasion. Will
the government ever grasp that
.*afc»/art and act on it?
Theodore Roosevelt, assistant
secretary of the navy, and gome
others, say that it would be a mis
take to have one single organization
of fighting fliers. There should be,
he thinks, a flying department for
the army and another for the nevy.
That would give two sets of sec
retaries something to play with and
cost the people a double "over
head.” But it is not common
sense.
This country should have one
great flying army, by 100 per cent
greater than any other on earth.
Kvery man in that force should be
taught air fighting and well paid.
In peace they would work for the
mails. • In war, under one chief
commander, they would fight for
the nation. Barked up by sub
marines they would make this
country absolutely safe from at
tack.
Chayanoff, Russian minister of
agriculture, makes some predic
tions, not too pleasant for Ameri
can farmers. Reing a bolahevist,
you will admit, does not make it
impossible for a man to understand
agriculture.
Chayanoff says that Russia will
soon take America’s place in the
grain market of the world, and may
. coon be exporting fodder and other
farm products to this country. Jle
calls American farmers “mere hired
men of the capitalists.'’ That is
not complimentary, hut you cannot
deny that the real job assigned
farmers is paying dividends to rail
roads, fertilizer concerns and mak
era of agricultural machinery.

Robins, rising temperature and
rain may be used by. some people to
determine the advent of spring, but
Omaha police have a more Infallible
method and until the last few days
have stoutly declared that spring
wasn't really on the way.
Now, however, they are all agreed
that warm weather Is here to slay.
"When you begin to notice new
faces In the line of 'down and-outers'
who come to central police station at
night for a place to sleep, and you
begin ‘to miss s few of the old fa
miliar fares whirh appeared night
after night during lh» blustery nights
of the winter, then you know that
spring is surely coming,'’ declares
Captain Rert Thorpe.
"It's a kind of strange feeling when
the first few of the old faces disap
pear," he said. "During the cold
nights we almost used to look for
them; they were regular visitors, poor
chaps who had no place to call home.
Now they’ve hit the road for other
territory.
"The faces which come to the desk
sergeant's window now are the faces
of transients. They will pass on. The
wanderlust has taken the ones wc
grew to know by name."
When the bums and hoboes—

—Here, near his ancestral home, a
memorial tablet to Walter Hines
Page, friend of Kngland, American
ambassador to the court of St. James
throughout the great war, was un
veiled today by the present American
ambassador, Frank B. Kellogg.
The services were conducted by j
the archbishop of York, and many I
prominent persons in the official and i
social life attended.
The Page tablet Is a part of an
American memorial in the church of
St. Peter and St. Paul, an ancient
edifice built on the site of a Saxon
church.
On the chancel on the north wall
of the church there Is an American
monument commemorating Nicholas
King, surveyor of the city of Wash
ington, who died in 18111, this monu
rnent being the center of an Ameri
can memorial on eithr ide of which
American flags are displayed perma
nently.
Above the memorial is a plate re
ferring to Anglo American co-opera
tion during the great war and. as a
pendant to this plate, another, the
Page memorial, was affixed.
In his memorial address. Ambassa
dor Kellogg characterized Walter
Hines Page as the man who did more
than any other in American public
life to make participation of the
I'nlted States in th« world war pos
sibla.
Mr. Page s great contribution to |
America and England was during the
war before the entry of the United
State*, according to Mr. Kellogg. His
tact, statesmanship, courtesy and 1
greatness of heart at that period,
smoothed away and prevented serious;
misunderstandings, which might have
ihad grave consequences. During all
[ this time he carried a load of sorrow,
which the terrible conflict cast like a
shadow over his life. He lived to se**
triumphant the cause which he had
.advocated, but five years of Incessant
labors cost him his life, which was
given for his country «s truly as if
it were given on the field of liattle.
In concluding his address, the am
bassador said:
*T and my countrymen thank those
who conceived the plan to place in
this ancient church a tablet to hi*
memory. Through long year to conic
may he the visible evidence of the fact
that when the great test came Walter
Page did truly represent his land, and 1
America saw freedom, justice and I
right as you saw it, and gave Ps
youth to stand side by side, with
yours.

Chicago, April 6.—Foreign white
farmers in the United States are
more successful titan nati\e born
whites, according to analysis of the
census records mode by the Sears
Roebuck Agricultural foundation.
In 1920, 79.9 per cent of the foreign
born farmers owned their own farms,
while 65.5 native born farmers were
proprietors, the analysis said. Only
18.9 per cent of the foreign bom were
tenants, compared to 3.?.2 per cent
native born.
Farms of foreign born owners aver
aged 191 acres, with an average
value of $15,466, against 162-acre
farms with an average value of $11,
123 for native born farmers, the sur
ev showi'd.
The Scandinavian countries and
Germany furnished the bulk of the
106 foreign born farmers out of every
1.000 white farmers in 1920. Danish
farmers cultivated 5,149,000 acres,
equal to more than half the area of
their native country. German farm
ers tilled an acreage equal to 19 per
cent of the total pre-war area of Ger
many. Canada, Austria. Russia and
England furnished percentages of
foreign horn farmers ranging from
S.4 to 4.6 per cent.
