Chicago, March 17.—Corn and o«t* met Improved support late today and bulged rapidly as nhortp scurried to cover on an oversold market. The decline In wheat was thus arrested, thta grain rally ing to a fractional advance at the lant. Export business over Sunday was not very active Liverpool wheat futures were Hi pence lower to 1 Hi panes higher. Wheat closed *4c higher, com was \ fr 1 He higher, oat* were higher and rye ruled Htr Hic advanced. May wheat was 'on tap" throughout from commission houses and support was confined to the deferred deliveries. Spreaders were again absorbing the of ferings here against sales at Winnipeg in the nature of undoing spreads. The latter market was relatively steady and finished at a lessened discount compared with Chicago. Local traders pressed tlje selling aide of corn during the early trade, but were forced to cover at higher levels. Country roada are In bad shape over wide areas. Buying of oats by several prominent commission houses late in the dav bulged thla grain sharply. Cash oats were in a more active demand. Kyo followed other grain to higher levels, but failed to show much activity. Provision* were **asv in a very slow trade. Lard was 5tfr7V*c lower and ribs were 2%©7Vfcc lower. Pit Notes. . ,. Private reports from the northwest tool of exceptionally dry soil conditions for this season of the year. With sowing about to start there the trade was in clined to become apprehensive. The bull ish Import of this news, however, was somewhat offset by flattering accounts from the southwest, where winter wheat is getting along nicely. Foreign developments were more In fa vor of the bull, but seemed to have only temporary Influence. Wheat and flour on ocean passage for the week decreased 2.492.000 bushels There were private opinions to the effect that Europe would be heavy buyers of American wheat with the advent of amicable reparations set tlements abroad, but this sort of news was ignored. The decrease of 760,000 bushels In the United Slates wheat visible was regarded as Insignificant for this season of the year, but It came at a time when the market was following corn upward. There appeared to be a disposition in some quar ters to stay close to the speculative shore, until the government had published an estimate on spring wheat acreage. The Canadian wheat situation seems to have firmed lately. Farmers there are not selling very freely. In fact reports say that the heavy liquidation or wheat in the American markets last week at tracted little long sejling there. Also the country stepped in and bought wheat around the dollar mark.
