hind feet out behind him.
"Wheel" cried Little Joe Otter, and
then he disappeared In the water at
the foot of the slippery slide.
In a moment his little brown head
bobbed up. ‘Come on, Billy Mlnkl”
he cried.
But Billy couldn't get up courage
enough to'try It. He wanted to. He
wasn't afraid of the water at the bot
tom as most other little people would
ha\e been. Put somehow he couldn't
trust himself off hia feet. Little
Joe Otter laughed at him and made
fun of him. Finally Billy did slide
down, but he didn't tuck hla feet out,
of the wav the way Little Joe otter
did. and he didn't start off with a
hard Hick. He went down on al*
four feet, squatting down. He didn’t
go nearly as fast as Little Joe had
gone, and he made a bigger splash
when he hit the water.
. "You don't do it the right way,"
said Little Joe when they were once
more at the top of the slippery slide.
"Now watch me closely." Once more
he slid flat on hla stomach. He went
down like a brown streak. Blacky
the Crow', who had stopped In the top
of a tree nearby to watch, shivered
as he saw Little Joe disappear in the
black water.
"That may be fun," said Blacky the
Crow, “but It make* me cold Just to
watch. Brrrrrr!" You see Blaiky
quite forgot that warm, wtterpi-f
fur coat that Little Joo Otter wore
No boy with a sled ever had more
fun tfcan did Little Joe Otter. No boy
ever enjoyed eliding more. He slid
down and climbed up and slid down
and climbed up until Blacky the Crow
actually felt tired Just watching him,
and finally flew away. Little Joe
was etlll eliding, and he kept It up
until at last the ex«rcise made him
hungry Then he swam away under
the Ice to look for fish.
