at both John Dougherty, alias Duffy.
Philadelphia gunman and killer, and
his Valentine’s day bride, Maybelle
Exley Duffy, today were held xvlth

Man Who Drank Poison Was
Engaged to Landlay,
Police Allege.
Max Ilazelrig, roomer at 7X8 West
Washington avenue, was removed to
Mercy hospital. Council Bluffs, yes
terday, after he drank about half
of a pint bottle of poison.
He was attended by Dr. Ilarry
Kelly, police surgeon, and Dr. Har
riett Hammond. Police were called
by Mrs. Elsie F. Smith, proprietor jof
the rooming house.
Ilazelrig, at the hospital, said he
(lid not know why lie drank the
poison, nor where he got it.
Hast summer he and Mrs. Smith
were engaged. The engagement was
broken off last duly, three weeks be
fore they w-ere to have been married,
by Mrs. Smith. Ilazelrig continued to
live at the house, and he and Mrs.
Smith were on the best of terms. He
occasionally accompanied her to so
cial functions, and continued to pro
fess love for her, Mrs. Smith said.
She denied that the broken engage
ment had anything to do with the
poison episode.
Ilazelrig Is employed as a clerk at
the Council Bluffs mall terminal. I1p
had a revolver in his room. He told
police Ills parents live "at Lincoln. His
condition this morning was reported
serious.
Mrs. Smith accompanied him to the
hospital In an ambulance and re
mained at his bedside until 8 this
morning.
