Nebraska has demonstrated through
Its system of county road building
programs, that this method Is unsatis
factory, according to \V. B. Cheek,
chairman of the Joint good roads com
mittee of the Omaha Chamber of
Commerce.
"At present each county Is con
cerned simply with roads In its lim
its and not with the proposition of
connecting highways aeross the
state.
"The condition of Nebraska roads
is not good publicity material. Tine
Joint good roads committee, com
posed of 11 organizations, has been
striving to get backing for the state
good roads association and have the
building of roads placed directly under
state supervision. In that way, con
nected highways will be built instead
of a piece here and another piece of
road some miles farther on.
Cities Would Benefit.
"What good Is It for one county to
have good roads and then at the
Jaunty line to Jump oft into a mud
/' hole? There Is no city In the state
hut what would benefited by a good
system of highways, especially
through highways. Even the local
roads now existing do not connect
tvlth main roads. The counties that
can't afford to develop a highway
must be helped by other counties."
"Putting tha road building pro
gram under ths state means money
for Omaha and the state and will do
much to put Nebraska on the map.”
said William A. Ellis, assistant com
missioner of the Chamber.
“The question Is not to be sneered
at cr treated lightly. The number of
machines on the highways of the
country annually Is more than 1,000,
000. These are filled with persons
who are taking trips outside their
own states.
Urges State System.
"If Nebraska Is eager to let the
money and business travel around
It, because of poor roads, let It keep
Its present system; If not, put through
a state system of roads.
"Every dollar placed In good roads
ts a paying Investment. It Is a saving
Individually and collectively. It saves
the automobile. It saves cost of trans
portation and saves accidents.
"Traffic count was made by the de
partment of public works from Aug
ust 20 to 26, 1922, at two stations on
the Omaha-Llncoln road. These
counts gave the average dally traf
fic over each mile of this road to be
1,036 vehicles. Taking the average of
2,700 pounds as the weight of each
vehicle, the total dally tonnage over
this road Is 1,398.
"With 14 ton-miles per gallon of
4(6isoline over dirt roads and 31 ton
miles over concrete roads, It requires
99 gallons to haul this load over each
mile of dirt road and 45 gallons over
concrete roads. Thus 54 gallons of
gasoline Is saved on each mile of
road every day by paving. The value
of 54 gallons of gasoline at 181-4
cents per gallon Is $9.99, the saving
on fuel by paving.
Big Fuel Saving.
'’Consider 1,036 vehicles as the av
erage traffic for 182 days and 40 per
cent of that as the average for 182
days. The annual saving on fuel on
each mile of road amounts to $2,548,
"The average life of an automobile j
over dirt roads Is about four years j
and over paved roads six years. The
average cqf travels about 5,000 miles
a year.
"The total miles traveled over each
mile of this road every year Is 263.
972. Thirteen cars are worn out
every year on each mile of this dirt
road and 8.7 cars would be worn out
If the road were paved. Paving would
thus make a saving of 4.3 cars year
ly. With an average value of $800
per car, this would amount to $3,440.
This would mean a total saving on
these two Items of $5,988, not taking
Into consideration the extra repairs
caused by rough roads.”

Bread Alleged
Creation of “Colossal Trust'’

Washington, Feb. 14.—A report
charging nation wide profiteering In
bread and the creation of a "colossal
bread trust is Impending," wan sub
mitted today by Basil M. Manly, di
rector of the Teople's legislative
service, to Senator Ea Follette of
Wisconsin, its chairman and "other
prpgressive senators and representa
tives.” The report, which wan out
lined in an announcement by the or
ganization, recommended congression
al action to deflate bread prices and
check the growth of the bread trust.”
An investigation of wheat and
bread prices, made at the request of
the senators and representatives to
whom tho report was submitted,
showed, it waa said, that the Ameri
can people are paying "a million dol
lars a day" too much for their bread.
The average retail price of breed In
the United States is D cents a pound,
whereas on the basis of present wheat
prices it should be 5 cents, the report
said, adding that bread made with
American flour is now selling in Eng
land at an average price of 4 cents a
pound.
Assarting millers, bakers and retail
ers were all making "enormous"
profits, the report cited as an example
the General Baking company, de
scribed as one of the two largest
wholesale baking corporations in the
country. As a result of the profits
made by this company, it was said,
*one dollar Invested In Its common
stock in 191# is now worth $309.”
Alleged "retailers’ rings" said to
be supported by the wholesale bakers
either voluntarily or under threat of
boycott, were declared to have sus
pended the law of supply and de
mand, resulting in artificial bread
prices in many cities. As an example
of tho effect of thIs«conditlon, the in
vestigation was said to have shown
that "bread costs 2 cents a pound less
in New Orleans and Houston, far
away ft*>m the wheat and flour mill
ing states, than in Chicago, Omaha,
Butte, Mont., and St. Paul, ail in the
heart of the wheat belt.”

eral Daugherty, declaring "the public
service must be put above all sus
picion whether that suspicion arises
from criminal guilt or stupid in
competence.”
"Standing by the secretary of the
navy now means nothing less in
effect than approval of what he did
or vacillation concerning It. . . . The
senate and the president alike have
expressed, so far as acts can ex
press It, no confidence In the attor
ney general.”
Devoting virtually his entire speech
to Teapot Dome, Senator Johnson
stated developments clearly Indicated
that "reaction and progress must
fight It out again in the republican
party In the coming presidential pri
maries.”
6 Separatists Slain '

Berlin, Feb. 14.—Six separatists
were killed at Badeurkhelm, a town
of 7,000 Inhabitants, yesterday in an
pntiseparatlst outbreak similar to that
at Ptrmasens. The separatists re
fused to evacuate the town and the
Inhabitants stormed the headquarters.
French gendarmes intervened and
dispersed the crowd.

Tuesday in Miami, Fla., was one of
the most efficient foreign missionary
secretaries tho Methodist Episcopal

John L. Nuelsen, head of the Method
ist church area comprising Switzer
land. Germany, Russia, Austria and
the small countries of the Baltic sea.
Bishop Nuelsen arrived In Omaha
Thursday morning* He was formerly
bishop of the Methodist area for Ne
braska and Iowa, which position

sen was here from 1908 to 1912. He
has visited In Omaha many tlruea
since then.
