Omaha Grain Omaha. Jan. 28, 1924. Total receipts at Omana were 411 cnri for the first two days, hs compared with t'J.l tars last year. Total shipments were !8« cars, against 218 cars last year. Cash wheat on the Omaha market was in good demand at unchanged to ic higher prices. The heavy offerings of corn were well taken at unchanged to lc lower, oats was strong, 14 c to higher. Ry« and barley were quoted about unchanged. Heavy receipts of corn and lower Liver pool wheat cables caused a lower trend in the Chicago futures market during the early trading toda> Around inaide fig ures. however.. Commission houses came in as strong buyers of wheat, corn and oats, and prices turned upward, advancing sharply until all commodities were above the nigh level of Saturday. A good sized decrease in the visible supply statement of wheat, ami corn started shorts to cov ering on n. market that was rather bare of offerings. Market, News. Springfield, 111.—Any further break from these prices will only retard the move ment of corn from <1ie country, as ship pers show no Inclination to sell at pre vailing bids. Chicago.—One of the leading local trad ers, who was extremely bullish up to a few days ago, when he turned bearish, says that the average farmer would do well to sell some of his cash corn* and hold livestock instead of apparently sell ing his livestock and homing his corn. He fears that unless there is a letup in the movement of livestock and an In crease in the sales of corn that supplies of the latter will be rather burdensome •later in the season. Washington. D. C.—Representatives of the Department of Agriculture just re turned from tlertnany report that coun try’s food iltuation gives prospect of only slight improvement during this year. Washington. 1>. «*.— A group of nine senators—republicans, democrats and fnrtn lahorltes—sends a message to farmers of ihe northwest calling upon them to get together on the question of farm relief legislation and tell congress just what they want. Chicago, Jan. 28.—Aggressive buying of corn futures was resumed today after an early decline, prices rallying briskly to a strong anti higher close. Thla inde pendent move on the part of the yellow cereal brought about a fair recovery throughout the grain list. Wheat finished with a fractional gain and oats prices also showed an advance. Wheat closed \kc to higher* corn was **e to advanced: oata were kc to %c higher, and rve ruled Uc up. Local operators expressed bearish views on wheat and sold the market down during the first hour. The same sort of eastern absorption was ever present on the decline and when corn bulged early buyers of wl eat “came ln.“ Above 11.09 for the May. a house with southwest connections was a fair seller. Export sales of wheat were placed at from 400.000 to 500.000 let’? he Is. May corn again moved over the 80c level. A matter of price l<^ having llftle effect at this time. The Increased re ceipts influenced early selling hut bulls who were credited with taking profits recently reinstated lines on the break, and covering by shorts started a recovery that was impressive. Trade In oats was active and commis sion house support met with little op position except on the bulge. Rye was helped by the strength in other grains and closed higher. Commis sion house buying absorbed the early sur plus offering?. Provisions were depressed bv • larger run of hogs than expected and ths sus tained weakness in cotton seed oil. Lard was 16c to 25c lower and ribs were 12\*c to 16c lower. Pit Notes. The decision handed down by the su preme court, upholding that speculation in daw sugar 1? legitimate, seemed to re flect considerable optimism In ths grain market an.1 may have urged part of the better trade witnessed. Legislation lias been hampering specu late in grains for some time. With speculative markets being recognised by the supreme s court’s decision politicians may thus lose some of their so-called well meant enthusiasm in helping to solve the agricultural problem by regulatory mea sures in the grain exchange. , The possibility of the organisation of a federal export grain association, as back et! by Secretary of Agriculture Wallace, attracted considerable attention In the trade. Any steps taken to facilitate the outlet of our surplus wheat to Europe is bound to have a \ ery favorable effect. The movement of wheat to primary market* continued low. There were ad vices from the southwest that in some sections 25 per cent of the winter wheat crop Is yet to be marketed The trade generally believes, however, that there Is little loft to come forward. The United States visible showed another decrease and wheat stocks so far this year, have decreased over 6.000,000 bushels. CHICAGO C ASH TRICES. By Updike Grain Co. AT. 6312 Art. | Open.
