[ Stories J
By THORNTON \V. BIKGKSS.
All folks are prone to much «am!re
The thing they haven’t, but desire
—Old Mother Nature.
Trader's Castle.
Danny find Nanny Meadow Mouse
could hardly believe their ears when
Trader the Wood Rat told them he
had built that great house he had In
vited them over to see. It hadn't
entered their heads that he had or
could have built that great pile of
sticks and leaves up in the tangle of
vines in that tree. They had thought
that of course he had made use of
the old nest of some one else.
“Do you really mean that you have
built every bit of this yourself V That
there wasn't even a platform here
when you began?" Danny asked
Trader nodded. “1 mean just that,-'
said he. "There was nothing here and
there never bad been anything here.
I chose this place because it looked
good to me and, as I told you before,
"Don’t your enemies know about
this house?” asked Danny.
every stick in it I brought myself.
Inside Danny and Nanny found a
snug, soft, comfortable bed. It was
in the middle of that great pile. They
couldn’t admire, it enough. But there
were some things about it that Dan
ny couldn't understand. You know.
Danny and Nanny try to hide their
home. If this great house had been
the deserted home of some one else
they could have understood how
Trader might have chosen it for a
home because hi^ enemies would
think it still an old. deserted house
But a new house like this is a dif
ferent matter altogether.
"Don't your enemies know about
this house?” asked Danny.
"Of course.'1 replied Trader with a
grin. "They all know about It. They
Would have to be blind not to know
about it."
Danny looked more puzzled than
ever. "Does Yowler the Bob Cat
know?” he inquired.
Again Trader grinned. 'Tie has paid
it several visits," said he. “He has
chased me into it more than once.”
"If he has done that, why hasn't
he torn it to pieces and caught you
in here?" demanded Danny.
Trader chuckled. "He has tried it/"
said he. "Yes, sir, he has tried It. I
don't believe he will again, though.
He found a bigger job on his pans
than he expected. He doesn't like
work well enough to tear this house
•pen. He would have to take it apart
a stick at a time, and by the time
he got in here I wouldn't be here,
and he knows it. This house Is built
the way a house should be "
It was true. Trader's house was
really a castle. Those sticks had been
«o worked in together that not even
Yowler the Bob Cat could pull them
i.part. They would have to be taken
out as they had been put in. one at
a time. That is why Trader didn't
worry. It was a wonderful house.
Danny said so. Nanny said so.
Trader looked Pleased.
"I'm glad you like it." said he.
