At is the way with Meadow Mice, Danny and Nanny were abroad both by day and night. Whenever they were hungry they went to look for something to eat. alt made no dif ference whether the sun was shining or the moon was shining. Often when tiiey were out at night they met their newly fount! relative. Trader the Wood Hat. llut they never met him in the daytime. Danny mentioned this to hltn once. "I don't like sunlight," lie replied promptly. “I guess my big eyes were given me for use at night aftd not In tho daytime.” "Vour eyes remind me of the eyes of Timmy the Flying Squirrel, and he never conies out until after dark,” spoke up Nanny. "What do you do in the daytime? ' asked Danny. "Sleep,” replied Trader. “That reminds me, where is your home?" salt! Danny. “Not very'far from here,” replied Trader. "It is just back a little way in the woods. Come over and see it. it is a pretty gooi home, if I do say so. I don t believe In bragging, but Just the same I don't know of any bet ter home than mine. Come along and see what you think of It.” Having nothing in particular to do, Danny and Nanny accepted the Invi tation. Truth to tell, they were very curious. They had wondered a great “Here we are,’’ said lie at last. many times what kind of a home their cousin Trader had. They won dered If it wai a hole in the ground like that of their hateful cousin, IJl tle Robber the Cotton Rat. ‘Tie's such a smart fellow he prob ably has it well hidden,” Danny had said. And to this Nanny had agreed. So they were quite ready to follow Trader and visit his home. He led them a short distance Into the woods. "Here we are.’’ said he at last, stop ping at the foot of a tree. Then with out waiting for them to reply, he climbed that tree as nimbly as a Squirrel. Danny and Nanny looked up. Half way up that tree was a tangle of vines, and in the midst of that tangle was a great mass of sticks and leaves. It was two or three times as big as the summer home of Happy Jack and Cray Squirrel. It was so big that for a moment they didn't think It could tie Trader's home. Rut they saw him disappear in it, and they heard him calling them to come on up. Now, while Danny and Nanny Mea dow Mouse spent most of their time on the ground, they can climb, as you already know. This wasn't a hard tree to climb, so after hesitating a moment or two Danny started up and Nanny followed. Whew they reached that great mass of dry sticks and leaves It looked ever bigger than It had from the ground. Trader (Kicked his head out from an opening. .“Well,” said he, "what do you think of it?” “I think it is a splendid place for a home,” replied Danny. “I suppose it is the old home of some one a great deal bigger than you.” "Nothing of the kind,” retorted Trader. “I built It myself. Kvery stick in it I brought and put In place. It was a lot of work. Yes, sir. it was a lot of work. Rut work never jet hurt any one. Come In and make yourselves at home.’’ tcMpyt'fht, 1>:» I , The next story: 'Trader's Castle.” Farmers May Hold l |> Corn. Res Moines. la.
