From Execution
American Missionary Taken
to Ravine to Be Killed—
General Wu Intercedes.

Pekin, Jan. 21.—rMrs. Julina Kilen,
American missionary worker, who
recently was rescued after having
been held captive for two weeks by
Chinese bandits, owes her escape to
General Wu Pel-Fu, commander of
the northern provinces, whose agents
negotiated Chinese fashion for her
release after the bandits had been
practically surrounded. Details of
the manner in which her rescue was
c ffected and of her experiences were
t elated by Maj. John Magruder, mili
tary attache of the American legation,
on his return today from Honan prov
ince, where he had gone to urge Chi
nese officials to act against the kid
napers.
During her captivity Mrs. Kilen,
whose home is In North Field, Minn.,
i onstantly was kept moving, seldom
obtaining a whole night's sleep, she
told Major Magruder after her arri
tal at General Wu's headquarters at
I.oyang, Honan. Several times she
was threatened with death.
The bandits at one time decided to
kill Mrs. Kilen to throw off pursuit,
and designated an executioner, but
her life was saved by the arguments
of an aged member of the gang, after
^Preparations were made for slaying
^ "her, according to Major Magruder.
Hard pressed by government troops
pursuing them, the bandits decided
they would get rid of the "foreign
devil" who was responsible for the
close pursuit.
Executioner Designated.
Mrs. Kilen was taken to a ravine,
which she described as a "beautiful
spot," where she was to be slain. Her
executioner already had been desig
nated.
"I was not afraid, however, be
cause I did not believe God would al
low me to die thus,” Mrs. Kilen is
quoted as saying.
Noticing a hesitancy and disputing
among the bandits, Mrs. Kilen asked
the aged man who was one of her
captors why they wished to kill her.
She told him she was not afraid to
did. but that it would be useless for
them to kill her. The old bandit went
back to his companions and ha
rangued them, declaring:
"This good woman has done noth
ing to deserve killing, .1 refuse.”
Mrs. Kilen then walked back to
the camp, and the bandits almost im
mediately resumed their flight, with
the troops at their heels.
Eventually there appeared among
the bandits <'a gentleman dressed in
silks," who seemed to he bargaining
with them, and shortly afterward
Mrs. Kilen was told that she was
free. Later she was escorted to

Well Treated
Airs. Kilen said that she had been
well treated by tlie bandits except
that ahe had been subjected to con
stant scrutiny owing to the curiosity
her captors, and was forced to en
dure endless comments and criticism
of her features and her person, which
were almost unendurable, hut to
which she accustomed herself and
ignored.
At night she was forced to sleep
oil the floor among her custodians,
who never permitted her to go out
of their sight. Often after only two
hours’ sleep she was aroused, com
pelled to mount a horse and continue
the flight with the bandits, she said.
Mrs. Kilen appeared to be unaf
fected by her experiences tipon her
arival at Loyang, where she was met
by a brother who also is a missionary.

Ruling to Bryan
Sheriff Riled Over Muny
Judges’ Search Warrant
Resolution.
Sheriff M. L. Endres announced
Monday morning that he plans to
take up the matter of obtaining
search warrants with Governor Bryan
unless some change ia made in the
recent ruling by municipal judges.
"Either the judges don't trust me
or someone thinks I'm too active in
enforcing law,” said tho sheriff.
The judges, meeting Friday night,
resolved that all complaints submitted
for search warrants shall he O. K.'d
either l>y the county attorney or the
chief of police, and shall he accom
panied by a written statement of facts
on which complaints fur warrants are
based.
"I can't imagine myself going to
the chief of police on bended knees
asking him to endorse my complaints
so I can get warrants," continued
Sheriff Endres. "I can still get war
rants through the county attorney
and county court, but it is faster to
try cases in police court. We don't
have money to spend, either, in get
ting 'buys’ on law violators.
“The sheriff is supposed to be the
chief law enforcement officer of the
county, yet my work is being handi
capped by this ruling. I'm going to
make a test case of this ruling and
probably take it up with the gov
ernor."
