"Dishonest,” Says
Zangwill of Ford
Declares Story of Jews’ Plan
to Rule World Proven
False.

Chicago, Jan. 14.—If possession of
great capital is a danger to the coun
try, then Henry Ford is one of the
greatest dangers to the United States,
Israel Zangwill, author and dramat
ist. declared last night In an address
before the Jewish Peoples’ Institute.
Mr. Zangwill made this statement
fter pointing out that one of the
i easons often given for opposition to
t lie Jewish race was ‘'capitalism.”
Another reason often given, he said,
was that the Jews were ’'bolsheviks,”
and a third was that Jews killed
Christ.
"We are out to bring the world to
peace and Justice,” Mr. Zangwill de
clared, adding that this purpose of
his race was very different from
Ford’s idea of the objective of the
Jews. The author said that the leg
end of the “Elders of the Zion" the
story of the aspiration of the Jews
o seek control of the world, had long
ago bien exposed as a forgery, but
that the story still continued and he
characterized Mr. Ford as "dishonest”
in his attacks upon the Jews.’
Referring lo the Ku Klux Klan.

Speaking of the Jewish problem
and Palestine the author declared
that part of the blame for the situa
tion rests upon the Jews themselves,
because they were not willing to
make the sacrifice necessary in Solv
ing the Palestine question.

New Yurk. Jan. 14.—A bombshell
id. dropped in the great church con
troversy Sunday, when the Rev.
Leighton Parks, who recently defied
ihe bishops to try him for heresy, re
canted.
He startled his congregation by
definitely joining with the fundamen
talists. He had been considered one
of the leaders of the modernist group
,n the Episcopal church.
In bis previous sermon, he ques
tioned the historic fact of the virgin
■ drill. Today, he lauded the estab
lished position of the church in re
spect to such matters as the virgin
birth and the physical resurrection of
^^10 body.
Without explanation, he denounced
Modernism and said he deplored the
met that It was taught In the schools
nd colleges and that the younger
generation was being led to believe
hat the physical birth of Jesus was
i myth.
Other New York clergymen
preached on the controversy over the
literal interpretation of the scrip
tures.
Rev. Dr. John Roach Straton said
modernist ministers are "theological
cuckoo birds" who have stolen the
nests of others. He advised them to
get out.
Rev. Dr. Percy Stlckney Grant ar
gued that heretics in the church con
stitute a minority with the right to
remain. He said Jesus was a heretic
of h is day.
Rev. John Haynes Holmes said the
issue raised the question:
"Can a man he religious and Intel
lectual at the same time?"
Rev. Dr. JVilliam Norman Guthrie,
explaining "pagan services” held ir.
Ids church, said the old church must
either sell out and follow its people
or find a new service for new people."
Rev. Dr. Henry VanDyke, poet and
former ambassador to Holland, preach
ing here today, scored fundamental
ism but upheld the divinity of Jesus.

tabling Mr. Bryan’s statement.

Mr. Bryan’s statement follows:
”If elected a delegate to the na
tional convention, I shall present the
name of Dr. A. A. Murphree. presh
ilcut of the Xlniverslty of Florida, as
a candidate for the democratic nom
ination for the office of president.
There are a number of Floridians
whose names have been mentioned
and who are deserving of consider
ation, In this connection, such a*
Senator Fletcher, Governor Hardee,
and Judge Nathan Bryan. I would
be glad to support any of them, but
I believe that just at this time Dr.
Murphree possesses more points of
advantage and less points of attack
Ilian any other of the persons whose
names have been mentioned.

Beyond this, Dr. Murphree was re
luctant to talk.
Dr. Murphree, a native of Alabama,
was born in 1870 and came to Florida
as professor of mathematics at the
Florida State college at Tallahassee.
He was appointed president of that
institution in 1897 and continued in
that capacity until 1905, when the
college was divided Into the Florida
State college for women at Tallahas
see and the University of Florida at
Gainesville.
He became the first president of the
women's college. He remained as
president there from 1905 to July,
1909, when he was appointed presi
dent of the University of Florida and
has remained at that institution's
head since.
