New York, Jan. 10.—Stock prices dip played a firm undertone today despite an unusually largo volume of profit-taking and bear selling In various sections of the li*r. particularly in some of the motors, chemicals arid tobacco* Bullish demonstration again took place in a nurn brr of the low priced rails, but with the exception of Missouri Pacific prCTerreri, which closed 2 points higher, the gains In most cases were materially deduced or canceled in the afternoon realizing sales. Operators on the long aide were favored with a series cf favorable trade development* These included an in crease in the unfilled orders of the United States Steel corporation for the first time since last March, higher lead, zinc end crude oil prices, a further tic creaT in crude oil production, overnight announcement of the Kay-Chino copper 1 merger and low money rates, call funds | being available at 4 per cent for the i first time since October 39. Apparent proof of reports that there has been heavy European buying of American securities was seen in the^ brisk demand for dollar bills In London, ^hlch sent, demand sterling down %c to $4.27%. French franca slumped R point* to 4.83 %<•, another new low record for all time, despite, the raising of the bank of Fiance discount rate from 5 to 5% per cent, which was construed here as an attempt to strengthen French exchange. Japanese yen sdld at their lowest price In 10 years in further reflection of the heavy Imports necessitated by the ravage* of ih» recent earthquake and uncertainty over the political situation engendered bv the recent cabinet drfrea. United States Steel crossed par on the tonnage announcement, but fell back larer to 99% where It was off % on the day. Independent Steels made a better showing. Gulf Stat»* rising 1% points and Crucible and Republic 1 each,. Some good gain** were recorded among the food, equipment. rubber and oil shares. Corn products climbed nearly 2 points to ! 6J. t lie highest on record, and then eased to 159%. Baldwin and General UIectrlc moved un large fractions. Good rich tire preferred advanced 2 points and th»- common and Goodyear common. 1 each. Quick absorption of the St. Paul bond issue was regarded as an indication of banking confidence in that. road, the stock issues making further progress on a la-ge turnover. Recent strength of New Haven was associated today with reports that the New York Central railroad was negotiating for lta New York. Ontario & Western stock. Rock Island crossed 27 on an Initial outburst of buying but forfeited a large part of Its gain later. The sharp break in United State* cast iron pip** was traceable to unconfirmed reports that the stork was being discrim inated against ns collateral. It dropped from 82% to 75%. closing 2 points above tli» low price for a net loss of 5 % points. Schulte S*orea broke nearly 3 points and Tobacco Products, 1%. United States In dustrial Alcohol. American dan. Great Northern pgeferred and Mack Truck all dropped a point or more. • all money opened at 4% and then eased to 4 Time money was still on a 4\ per cent baais with bualreas quiet.
