    Trial of Souder
Deputy Is Berlin
i -—
Move to Quash Indictments
Against Former Lincoln
County Official
Fails.
By Associated Press.
North Platte, Neb., Jan. S.—Selec
tion of a jury to try Elmer Baker,
former deputy treasurer of Lincoln
county, on charges of embezzlement
got under way late today, after Judge
•T. T. Tewell overruled motions to
quash the indictments against Baker.
Baker, who was a deputy under
former Treasurer Samuel M. Souder,
recently convicted of arson In connec
tion with the burning of the old Lin
coln county courthouse, was ousted
after the fire and the subsequent dis
covery that the treasurer and dep
uty were short in their accounts.
Baker is also charged wltn arson,
but it is said he will not be brought
to trial on this charge, as the evi
dence used in convicting Souder in
no way connected the former deputy
with the burning of the courthouse.
The indictment charging Raker
with embezzlement said that he was
short more than $9,000 in his ac
counts. It was thought the jury
would be completed by tomorrow aft
ernoon.

of ear corn are hung up inside the
car in gunny sacks, and troughs are
arranged in the car for water. By
taking two carloads of hogs, Chitwood
is passed free to southern California

It takes about seven days for the
one way trip by freight. The Pack
