With a long breath and a little

Many Omaha churches will hold ser

church. North Side Christian church
and the Dietz Memorial Methodist
church have planned services to bid
the new year welcome.
Most Catholic churches will have
short New Yt ar's eve services consist
ing of prayers of thanksgiving, ser
mon and benediction of the blessed
sacrament.
The Y. M. C. A. and Y. W. C. A.

and dancing will be the features of
these home gatherings.
* New York
-- Day by Day —
By O. O. M’INTYRE.
New Y'ork, Dec. 31.—A page from
the diary of a modern Samuel Pepys
Lay late aweary from travel, but up
at noon to send a telegram to Kin
Hubbard in Indianapolis, who is off
on a journey around the world with
Gdjrge Ade.
Through the town and to see Hale
Byers, newly come from London and
who hob-nobbed with the Wales
prince, but was unaffected withal.
Saw, too, Rita Weiman in a brave
black frock. Thence at my typewrit
er all the afternoon.
In the evening to Castle Cave to
tlie dinner honoring Frazier Hunt and
Frederick O'Brien, the pamphleteer,
there, and told many unpublished
tales of his adventures In the South
seas. Also there were R. H. Davis.
Heywood Broun, Damon Runyon.
Ray Long. William Slavens McNutt
and Ed Swazey and much rag, tag
and bobtail. So to bed.
Frazier Hunt, by the way, has
traveled all over the world and lived
In nearly all important capitals. But
to those who know and love him, he
!s s*111 Spike Hunt and as one of the
speakers said, “just a squr >toefl
country boy.” He is as tnuch at
home in Constantinople as in his
. home town, Alexis, 111. When you
t go to London the first thing the
» Britisher asks is, ‘‘Do Vou know
^Frazier Hunt?” Travel has not
■f Cramped his delightful midwest style.
When the last twa of Barnum’s
wild men of Borneo died in New
Vork a year ago, Sunday spare writ
ers bulged many columns with ac
counts of their capture in the Afri
can wilds. Just one newspaper had
the facts. This wag a little daily in
Mt. Vernon, O., whlth carried an
obituary not'ce revealing that the
wild men were born and reared in
that town. Zip, the Whatislt—a pin
headed freak—who was with Barnum
and is still a sideshow attraction, is
supposed to have been caught In
Africa. Zip really came from-an In
diana farm. He was for years a
harmless village half wit, but Barnum
•aw hia possibilities as a freak, and
weaving a background of mystery.
* h* made Zip a money-making attrac
tion ail over the world. The old
negro Is Independently rich.
I have often wondered where muse
um freaks go at night when their
tedious day of being on display is
over. At Coney island there is a
boarding house for freaks—conducted
by a freak. The museum people go
there In taxicabs when the work day
is ended. The freaks who nre dis
played Rt Madison Square Garden
when the circus is there all go to
their various hotels and boarding
houses In closed cabs when they leave
their platforms. It Is a violation of
their contracts to be seen in public.
For many years we have nursed a
S secret urge to have our name in lights
on Broadway. Dramatic critics alone
of the writing fraternity nre ac
corded this dinstlnction. “Fine play.
—Charles Darnton.” ‘‘A hit.—Burns
Mantle,” and ‘‘Elegant.—Alan Dale,”
and similar signs are a part of tbe
glitter of the Incandescent way. Last
night our ambition was gratified. We
happen to know an electrical expert
who was testing out a sign that will
Veil anything during the Sunday
calm. He had it spell out my name
find it flamed brilliantly for about tw
minutes. Our triumph, no doubt, is
due to upright living and hard work.
Luchn, the famous bandit In Poland.
Is said to have made out a complete
Income tax return. He listed the
profits of each holdup and paid tax
on his income.
