1 BURGESS BEDTIME STORIES I - l!y THORNTON \V. BL'RGKSS. Appearance no oft deceive Be not too ready to believe. —Old Mother Nature. Danny's Astonishing Surprise. Danny Meadow Moum never bad heard of a snake with a bill. But if this wasn't Just what he was looking at, then Danny could no longer trust Ilia eyes. To Danny any snake was had enough, but somehow one with a hill seemed worse. This Sunny South certainly waa a land of strange peo ple. Ddnny wished the leaves of that iree were not so thick. He wanted to see the whole of this snake with a bill. He wanted to see if It waa as I liter as Mr. Gopher Snake who had so badly frightened him a few days be fore. But the leaves were In the way, and all Danny could sec were the head, neck and what he thought was part of the body. Danny waited and waited and waited right where he was. He didn't wait because he wanted to wait. Oh my, no! No indeed! He waited be cause he didn't dare do anything else. He dldn t dare move. At last his long wait was brought to an end very sud denly. There was a movement be hind the leaves which hid the body of the snake with a bill. The head and neck disappeared. There was a splash In the water. "He must be a water snake." thought Danny, and peeped out over the water. Nothing was to be seen. The snake with a bill had disappeared, lie must be under water. Now was Danny's chance to get away from there. He knew it. He knew that the thing for him to do was to take to his short legs. Hut curiosity was too much for him. He was as curious as ever was Peter Kab THE NEBBS_ the sweetest story ever told. Directed for The Omaha Bee by Sol Hes* Astsrw' 'to'J C^N'T_V2-2.7 /CuELlTvAEn\ TELL ME * ' ^STORV.WDCtf, VOU'VE. So instead of running away, he [crept a little nearer to the tdge of the ibank that he might see better, i For a few minutes he saw nothing but the smooth water of the river, and Grandpa Pelican sitting on his favorite stump. Then some distance out from the shore suddenly appeared that same head and neck which had so frightened him at first. "He Is a snake! And lie has a bill!" gasped Danny to himself. "And, oh dear, he is coming straight over here!” Danny turned around. He took one more frightened look behind him. "I never” exclaim'd Danny. "I j never did!" Then he stopped. Yes, sir, he stopped. "1 never!” exclaimed Danny. never did!” He rubbed his eyes and looked again. He blinked. He blinked sev eral times. "Mo, sir, I never did!” he exclaimed again. There was no snake out there in (he water, but there was a bird, a big Vlack bird with silvery spots on his hack, and a long slim neck and snake like head, with a long, slim, very sharp bill. 'Even while Danny was looking this curious stranger sank un til hia body was below the water, leaving only his head and neck above. Danny knew then that this was the same fellow who had been up In the tree, and whom he had mistaken for a snake with a bill, because all he had been able to see had been that long, slim neck and head. "I never! I never did!” repeated Danny, and waited to see what would happen next. (Copyright. 1P22.) The next story: "Darter the Snake bird.” Curb Suspends Firm. New York.
