“My Husband’s Love”
An Intricately folded piece of stiff
white paper, swaying from the celling
light fixture, was the first thing 1
saw when I entered the apartment
after my visit to Mrs. Durkee and
Leila at the hospital. I knew at once
that it was a message from Dicky,
for he always leaves messages for me
in that way, and 1 tore it open
quickly.
“My little cabbage," the note be
gan, tiie fashion I most dislike.
“If Harriet hasn't seen you first this
is to tell you that your husband and
hers have skipped by the light of the
moon, or rather the sun, and al
though desolated, they will not be
able to» see you again before you
leave. Here's the dope: There's a
luncheon on at the club today to
which I’m going to take Edwin. I
want a chance to exhibit my dis
tinguished brother-in-law, and he has
a fancy to hear some of our lions
roar, and naturally we shall not wish
to keep one eye cocked on a railroad
timetable. So, as we have every con
fidence in your ability to get your
selves to the station, please consider
yourselves kissed goodby. We shall
run out to the farm at the earliest
opportunity Edwin can seize. Fare
thee well. • “D."
Dicky's notes are always ns in
souciant as his speech, but there was
something in the flippancy of the
one I held which puzzled me for a
minute. And then, with a little
laugh, in which satisfaction, malice
and regret were blended, I realized
that pique was the motif running be
neath the whole thing. He had not
liked my apparent eagerness fo go
to the farm, and he meant me to
see that he could lie equally indiffer
ent to my comings and goings.
The revelation was another hit of
halm applied to the sore spot in my
heart which Dicky's interest in Mol
lle Fawcett had caused. Purely, if
my vague fears were justified, he
would he glad to have me away from
the city for awhile, instead of being
piqued at my leaving.
A ring of tlie bell put an effectual
period to my musings, and thrust
ing the note hastily Into my dress I
went to the door, finding Harriet
there, as I had expected.
"Richard and Edwin have gone to
a luncheon," she began.

"Ye*, I just found a note from
Dicky."
"Oh, then you know. I'm all ready
to start, are you?”
“To the last pin," I amlled, "and
do you know," with a sudden remem
brance, “I believe, If we don't stop
for any lunch except a cup of tea
and a sandwich at the station, we
can get the 1 o'clock train out Instead
of waiting until 4 o’clock."
Characteristically, she wasted no
time In explanations or questions, but
turned toward the door.
"I'll lock up and bring my things
down here at once.” she said effici
ently, "unless—is there anything you
want me to do?"
"Not a thing, thank you.” I re
plied. "I'll call a taxi right away.”
I was at the telepnone before she
had closed the door, and secured the
promise of a car within 10 minutes.
Working swiftly, I set my own bags
already packed, into the hail, picked
up the things Dicky had strewn
around, and took a hasty last look
into the kitchen, which I had put
in order before I left In the morn
ing. I already had given instruc
tions to the janitor about my let
box, so it was with a mind domesti
cally at rest that I joined Harriet at
my hall door, and with her traveled
to the station.
She was noticeably silent during
the tedious Journey to the east end
of the island, and I knew she was
sorely beset by fears that she had
done the wrong thing after all In
leaving her tyusband to his own de
vices, after years of assiduous, al
most absurd protection of him from
every annoyance. Hut th^ro was
nothing I could do to alleviate hen
anxiety, so I wisely kept silence,
mg a relieved sigh, however, when
the train finally pulled Into Brldge
hampton. for X knew that when my
mother-in-law ahould fasten her con
ventional tentacles upon the be
loved daughter whom ehe had not
seen for several years, Harriet would
have no time for sessions with
uneasy conscience.
