Income Tax
^ Forms Changed
Time to File 1921 Return*
Starts January 2—Blanks
Are Simplified.
Washington, Dec. 26.—A week from
yesterday, just when the Christmas
bills begin to come in, 1'ncle Sam w ill
start reminding 7,<HH),00U taxpayers
it's time to figure up 1921 income.
The period for filing income tax re
turns is from January 1 to March 15.
On January 2, the first being a holi
day, forms for filing individual cor
poration partnership, personal ser
vice corporation, information, fidu
ciary and other returns required by
the revenue act, will be available at
the offices of collectors of Internal
revenue throughout the country.
At the same time the internal rev
enue bureau will start mailing forms
to the approximately 7,000,000 tax
payers who filed returns this year
for 1922 incomes. This year the in
dividual taxpayer will not need a
chart arid compass, lawyer and en
cyclopedia to make out his return.
Form 1040A, heretofore used for
filing returns of individual net in
come of $5,000 and less, from what
ever source derived, has been revised
and simplified for tho benefit of
salaried persons and wage earners,
the largest class of taxpayers.
Three Questions to Answer.
The new form consists of a single
sheet, with spuee porvided for an
swers to only three questions in re
lation to Income. They are salaries,
wages, commissions, etc., interest on
bank deposits, notes, mortgages and
corporation bonds, and “other in
^me," Ail instructions are on the
~ reverse side.
Heretofore form 1040A has consist
ed of six pages, with innumerable
questions pertaining not only to sal
aries and wages, but to income deriv
ed from business, professions, sales of
real estate and other sources.
Seventy per cent, or close to 5,
000,000 of those who annually are re
quired to file income tax returns will
use the new form, revenue officials
estimate. It being impossible this
yetfr to determine the form required
by the taxpayer, the bureau will mail
to each person on last year's list a
copy of 1040A and also of form 1040,
required in cases where tho net in
come was in excess of $5,000 and
whether derived from salary or wages,
business or profession or other tax
able sources.

New York
- Day by Day—
I5y O. O. MrINTYRE.
Houston, Tex., pec. 2G.—Houston is
very much like a home town to me.
Yet I had never visited it before.
When I started on my little adventure
in self syndication one of the first
editors to throw out a lifeline was
M. E. Foster of the Chronicle. His
paper has used my articles ever since.
Houston is also the home of B.ll
Mugg, whose guest 1 am while here.
Bill was also with me in Mexico City.
A Xew Yorker—Bill spends most of
his time in the east—has described
him exactly with “Bill spends half his
time helping the other fellow and the
other half trying to give the Impres
sion he's hard boiled.
Houston retains the pristine charm
of the old south. There is a subtle
breathlessness among the moonlight
and palm trees and' the fine homes
looming through the dimness. I went
to sleep re-reading "Huckleberry
Finn” and was awarkened by the
song of a thrush outside the window.
At night Houston gives one the im
pression of aVleeping giant ready for
an alarming awakening. There is a
touch-an 1-go in the business district.
It is not a boom town, but marches
steadily onward. There be beggars
here and slums, but I have not seen
either. That is pleasant after Mex
ico.
In the morning I visited Rice in
stitute—one of the great educat.onnl
Institutes of America. I had met Dr.
Lovett, the president, in New York
and was happy to renew our acquaint
ance. Beyond the Institute are rows
of the cleverest electrical signboards
I have seen in America. It is fairy
land that would do credit to the
stagecraft of a Belasco.
Houston is the home of two of
America's foremost paragraphers —
Judd Mortimer Lewis and.tleorge M.
Bailey. They are journalistic trouba
dors who vibrate wit, cheer and kind
ly philosophy. Rare, kindred spirits.
The wild duck season is on here
and you see returning hunters with
autos strung with their kills. In New
York one pays $G for a roasted duck.
Down here a hunter gives you a trace
of them in the same fashion that a
New Yorker gives you a match.
The New Yorker at times has to
go away from his Island to see the
tragedies of Broadway. At one of the
theaters here I saw two aetors once
starred in their own productions. One,
indeed, has a theater that bears his
name. They are traveling as head
liners in a hodge podge revue. Their
wallop is gone. They are forced to
play in what they always called "the
sticks.” The welcome they now re
ceive is from those they oneo looked
upon with amused tolerance. Profes
sfonal death on Broadwny Is the hard
est thing the actor faces. To him
Broadway Is the only street In the
world.
I doff my hat to Klim, a waiter In
a quick lunch place In the center of
town. He serves conversational cheer
along with food. He is known to al
most every one In liounston. Klitn
Is hulit for speed and he serves a
long lino of customers in a manner
that bespeaks artistry.
Novelists and moving picture cap
tion writers are often referring to the
typical Texas drawl. I have failed
to hear it. People here have about
tho same inflection us northerners.
They are not quite so free with their
"r's,” but they haven't a drawling
manner of speech.
And I haven t*f" und a Texan who
carries a. six shooter when lie is in
town. In fact 1 have talked to in
numerable Texans who have never
fired a pistol.
