—Danny Meadow Mouse. |
Aii Old Friend Finds Danny.
Danny Meadow Mouse was bepin*
nlng to get used to the sunny souin.
He hadn’t found his way back to the
great man-bird, or airplane, which
had brought him down there and
where he felt sure Nanny was. He
missed Nanny, but not ss much as
he would have had there not been so
much that was new and strange to
him to look at and wonder about. He
was beginning to feel more at home
than he had at first. Almost every
day, he saw Mr. Mocker the Mock
ingbird, and this helped a lot.
Then one day he had a grad sur
prise. He had stopped to rest under
a plant which bore some bright flow
ers. He heard a humming sound, and
then before he could quite make out
where it came from a sharp, squeaky
voice Cried, "Am I dreaming, or is
this DAnny Meadow Mouse?"
"It is me. Of course it is me. Who
else could it be?" cried Danny, nnrl
ran out from under the plant, for he
had recognized that voice.
A tiny bird darted almost in Dan
ny's face, ills fhroat was like a red
Jewel. His bill was like a needle. He
stopped in mid air right in front of
Danny, then flew over to a twig and
alighted there.
"It is! It certainly is!" declared
Hummer the Hummingbird, for this
is who the little fellow was. "How
ever did you get here. Danny Meadow
Mouse? Have you grown a pair of
wings since I saw you late in the
summer tip on Green Meadows? '
Danny chuckled. "No. Hummer, I
haven't grown a pair of wings." said
he. "But I’m the same old Danny

1 Meadow Mouse you left up on the
Green Meadows. My. but it does my
eyes good Just to see you! Did you
fly all the way down here with those
tiny wings of yours?”
"You don't see any biggnr wings, do
you?” squeaked Hummer, and then
both laughed. "Of course I flew down
here,” he continued. "That Is tooth
ing. Some of my family spend the
winter as far south of here as this
Is south of your old home. For my

self, I am satisfied with It here, and
I shall stay here until it Is time to
go North again In the spring. But
that isn't telling me how you got
here.”
So once more Danny had to tell the
story of hla long journey In the great
man-bird.
“I've Bern those same man birds."
replied Hummer. “And they certain
ly can fly. But. my, what a noise
they make! I suppose that Is because
their wings move so fast." You know
the humming of Hummer Is made by
his swiftly moving wings. So it was
natural for him to think that the
noise of an airplane was made by its
wings. He- never had noticed that
those wings did not move at all.
"I hope I shall see you often,"
said Danny. "You know a fellow
feets lonesome In a strange place."
"Where is Nanny?" demanded
Hummer.
"She Is In that great man-bird, I
suppose." said Danny. "But I don’t
know where that great man-bird is.
I've lost it."
"Huh!" exclaimed Hummer. "That
was a stupid thing to do!”
"I know It." confessed Danny. "I’ve
been hunting for it, but I can't find
It."
