—Old Mother Nature.
Mr. Mocker Gives Warning.
Danny ami Nanny Meadow Mouse

that they were in a land strange to
them. They forgot that there might
be such a thing as danger.
Suddenly Mr. Moc ker the Mocking

snake was. They might run right in
to his mouth. Befot% they could make

linn ami throat, instead of being
white, as in tite ease of Mr. Black
snake, was reddish. It was Mr. tio
pher Snake, lie is also called Indigo
Snake, because of the bluish tint of
Ills shining coat. He really is a very
handsome fellow.
But'' Danny and Nanny saw no
bearfty in him. To them he was ter
rible, for they'knew ho would enjoy
nothing more than dining on a couple
of fat Meadow Mice. They didn’t
breathe. They were too frightened to
breathe. They squatted close to the
ground, as motionless as two little
stones They were so frightened they
couldn't have moved to save their
lives.
Never had they dreamed that there
cotild be such a big Snake.
But Mr. Gopher Snake didn’t see
them, lie had seen Salamander, and
now he glided straight for that little
sand pile of Salamander's. Uanny
and Nanny wondered if he would go
in after Salamander. But he didn't.
No sir, he didn't. For a moment or
two he acted as if in a tad temper.
