County in Texas
Zapata Is Most Unique ‘"Par
ish” in United States,
Claim.
lan-edo, Tex., Dec. 1.—Nestling in
the Rio Grande valley, pocketed be
tween Webb county on the north
and Starr county on the south, with
the Rio Grande—river of romance—
as its western boundary, lies Zapata
county. Texas, one of the most re
markable counties In the United
States.
Zapata county has the distinction
of being the only county in the United
States that gave a. unanimous vote
for William H. Taft for president in
1S08 while the remainder of Texas
was going overwhelmingly for Bryan
end the democratic ticket. In other
elections, although not so overwhelm
ingly republican, it has stood as a
rock of republicanism in a sea of
democracy.
Last fall, for the first time In his
tory, It elected a democratic county
ticket.
Despite Its proximity to the “land
of revolutions," from which it is
separated only by the sluggish waters
of the Rio Grande, fordable at most
times easily by a man on horseback.
ABVEKTISF.MENT.
Take Salts to Wash Kidneys
if Back Pains You or
Bladder Bothers.
Flush your kidneys by drinking a
quart of water each day, also take
salts Occasionally, says a noted au
thority, who tells us that too much
rich food forms acids which almost
paralyze the kidneys in their efforts
to expel it from the blood. They be
come sluggish and weakened; then
you may suffer with a dull misery
in the kidney region, sharp pains in
the back or sick headache, dizziness,
your stomach sours, tongue is coated,
and when the weather is bad you
have rheumatic twinges. The urine
gets cloudy, full of sediment, the
channels often get sore and Irritated,
obliging you to seek relief two or
three times-during the night.
To help neutralize these Irritating
acids, to help cleanse the kidneys
and flush off the body's urinous waste,
get four ounces of Jad Salts from
any pharmacy here; take a tablespoon/
ful In a glass of water before break
fast for a few days, and your kldngys
may then act fine. Thla famous gaits
isijnarte from the acid of grape* and
len on Juice, combined with lithia,
i»t«1 has been used for years <o help
flush and stimulate sluggish Iddneys;
also to neutralize the acids the sys
tem so they no longer Irritate, thus
often relieving bladder weakness.
Jad Salts is inexpensive; can not
injure and makes a delightful ef
fervt scent Hthla-water dr'nk. By all
means have your physician examine
your kidneys at l<^st twice a year.
Zapata ■county is one of the most
peaceful and law-abiding counties in
Ute entire United States.
No Prisoners for Year.
There has not been a prisoner in
the county jail for more than a year,
and district court has not met in the
county for many months, because
there has been no business to dis
pose of. Practically its entire popu
lation Is of Mexican extraction.
Only two children without Mexi
can blood in their veins were ever
born in Zapata county. These were
Joe and Hal Brennan, sons of Capf.
M. Brennan, Laredo's chief of police,
and they were born in San Ignacio,
when their father was stationed there
as deputy collector of customs during
President Cleveland's first term.
Zapata county is a very large coun
ty, covered with heavy undergrowth
and devoted almost exclusively to
cattle, sheep and goat raising. Along
the Hlo Grande there is a chain of
pretty valleys, where there is some
farming. The land is exceedingly
rich and fertile and, with irrigation,
will produce almost anything in the
greatest abundance. Within the last
two years shallow oil has been found
In the county, and It is believed that
with proper development It may yet
prove one of the greatest oil coun
ties of the state.
There is not a single mile of rail
road in the county, nor is there a
railroad closer than 12 miles to the
nearest point of the county line. Za
pata, the county seat, situated on the
banks of the Rio Grande, is 45 miles
from the nearest railroad station. San
Ignacio, with some 600 inhabitants,
is the largest town in the county.
Both towns have good schools, with
American teachers. The voting
strength of the county is about 350,
the voting being confined largely to
the two towns.
Ballantyne Killing Is

Salt Lake City, Dec. 1.—A dramatic
story of how Marriner A. Browning

wife, whtf is John Browning's sister.
Browning, testifying in his own de

of anger had rushed for his loaded re
volep, secured it and had swung prac
tically into position to shoot in spite
ot the fact that Browning had him
puvered and w-as cautioning him not
to do anything desperate; Marriner
Browning came In then, the witness
said, and, after calling to Ballantyne,
"Drop It, drop It," fired the shot
which resulted In Ballantyne's death.

■Washington, Dec. 1.—Albert B/
Fall, former secretary of the lnterlffr,
has been Invited by the public Jjuids
committee to again appear beftire It
in its Investigation of the leasing of
the Tea Pot Dome naval olfl reserve
to the Sinclair interests^
The invitation was extended yester
day after the committee heard testi
mony from several wttnesss rgardlng
Mr. Fall's prsonal financial status.
Inasmuch as this evidence was ad
mitted to the record, the committee
members decided, the former secre
tary should be given an opportunity
to make a statement If he so desires.
The committee heard conflicting
testimony about Mr. Fall's financial
affairs. Carl Cl. Magee, New Mexico
editor, said he observed considerable
Improvements on Mr. Fall's ranch at
Three Rivers last August, although
the former secretary told him In 1920
that he was "broke" and could not
keep up the property. Willard Har
ris, owner of land adjoining the Fall
ranch, on the other hand, testified
that some of these improvements had
been made several years ago.

Indianapolis, Ind., Dec. 1.—Thr for

Governor McCray by prompt filing
today of the 1115,000 bond required by
the Marlon county criminal court fol

with 191 counts by the county grand

i Charged with almost every c rime In
the category of high finance, inelud

and deserted by his political friends,
Governor McCray stood ready to fight
back as best he could.
”[ ask the public to reserve Judg

Two things were apparent in Me

They were:
1. —lie will not voluntarily quit hl3

2. —He can not be forced out.
Hlnce tho financial crisis In the
governor’s affairs developed and be
fore It was known the state itself was
involved, McCray turned a cold
shoulder to the republican state com

abdicate. That he will not do so now
Is taken for granted because It would
cripple him In a fight to disprove
the charges.
Like Oklahoma, Indiana cannot
easily shift Its governors. Impeach*
