Classified Ad News Is Good News. Read Them Thoroughly Every Day "New York — Day by Dav— By o. o. McIntyre. New York, Nov. 29.—la West Forty-seventh street Is Bootmaker’s How. Here fashionable New York goes to be shod. Perhaps the most celebrated bootmaker the town ever knew was James Moore. Three of his sons are now working at the bench in their own shops. The boot shops are unpretentious, dltnly lighted, and polished pots hang over the flickering fireplaces just as they did in the days when New York was a village with flagstone walks, men In velvet pants and dairy maids who carried three-legged stools. Many of them have no signs out side. Only a finished boot in the win dow denotes the calling. Their cus tomers are those whose parents wtere served by the bootmaker's parents. The bootmaker takes a keen pride in Ids work and he never sends out bills. During the war the hand-made boot sold for $60 a pair, but now the price lias declined to $40. The bootmaker will not promise his finished work in less than a month, and sometimes it will be six weeks before they are delivered—always In person by the bootmaker. The shops are mostly In rather di lapidated one or two-story buildings. The makers wear half aprons, blue denim shirts and half-rimmed steel spectacles. Some work at night by candle light. The halo of the past is ever with them. Despits the fact that they do not keep In step with the rushing world about them, I am told that nearly all of the bootmakers ars men of Independent fortunes, and one has ^0&vlly Invested In real estate that has quadrupled In ths past quarter of a century. There are also on Forty-seventh street several old-time saddlery shops. ' They cater to the fashionable patrons j of the riding academies and cling to the traditions in the same manner as | the bootmaker. What one misses mo^ in New | York are the characters who make j the small town so Interesting. There appear to be no Itinerant whitewash- j era or fiddlers. There are no lovable j 'old fellows—tender, simple souls who | whittle ships inside bottles, play | tunes on peach leaves and recite ' poems to the children. In our town j Whitewash Joe was beloved. He roamed the hills in the spring for medicinal herbs which he boiled Into nostrums in his. hutch back of Schreck's meat shop. He had a cure for everything save the racking cough which finally carried him off at the age of 91, He played lightly with life—drank hard, slept in door ways and was generally considered worthless. But the children loved him and he loved them. In the public library is a copy of the Daily Advertiser of January, 1789. Perusing its yellow stained pages, one finds the beginning o$ the Astors’ commercial career. Here is one item: "John Jacob Astor, next door but one to the Friend's Meeting house, has for safe an assortment of piano fortes of the newest construction which he will sell on reasonable terms. He gives cash for all kinds of and has for sale a lot of Canada beaver and beaver coating, raccoon skins, etc.” Seven infant musical prodigies , have made their bow to New York so far, and the season is not over. Their parents hire a hall, fill it with relatives and friends, and the young sters in curls and sashes "do their stuff.” Each has a press agent who tells of the dazzling technique and "great promise.” The children seem frightfully bored by it all and one imagines they would much rather be making mud pies or playing with dolls. It is told of one child who in a moment of rebellion cried to her parents: ”1 don’t want to be one of those Infant prodigals." One little prodigy at Town hall, who was butchering a classic with amateur fingers, slipped off the piano stool. The audience tittered and the mother had a fit of hysteria that made her a seml-invalld. Copyright, 1»2S LUDENDORFF IN DANGER OF DEATH Munich, Nov. 29.—Gen Erlich Du dendorff is in grave danger of meet ing with a violent death at the hands of an assassin.
