Drv Informer Denies Wooing - Accused Woman No Affair of Heart With Helen Lamb, Delmar Hollow away Testifies in Fed eral Court. Friendship between a prohibition evidence man and a woman accused of selling liquor was alleged in Judge J. AW AVoodrough's courtroom Mon day afternoon. The case was that of Helen Lamb, 24, and Edward Kes sler, both charged with violation of the national prohibition laws. The trial was interrupted during the cross-examination of Delmar Holloway, informer for Robert Ham anlick, general prohibition agent. Hnll iway admitted that he was ‘somewhat friendly” with Mrs. 1 imb, although he purchased two l ollies of evidence liquor of her, be sides n number of drinks, at her homp. 1616 Cass street. Holloway denied that he told Mrs. Lamb lhat if she married hint he would see that the charges would be dropped by Samardick. Sarnardick testified that when he raided the al leged resort, Kessler dumped a oof fee pot of corn whisky. Mrs. Lamb is to take the witness stand this morning. Didn't Know Name. Hollaway testified that he regis tered with a woman at the Harley] hotel as Mr. and Mrs. Jack Shaw and not as Jack Shaw and wife. “I want to enter a vigorous objec tion against counsel's examination,” MMiniited Deputy United States Dis trict Attorney Keyser, After Lovely finished with a rigid examination. Judge AA'oodrough stat ed that he didn't see that it was ma terial, as what the jury desired to know was whether any liouot: was purchased. "Didn't you register with Mts. Lamb at the Harley hotel, at loom 237?” asked Attorney AVilliain Love ly for the defendants. “I did register but not with Mr*. Lamb,” replied Holloway. ■'Who did you have?” again queried Lovely. “Didn’t you walk down the street towards the hotel with her?” ‘‘Yes, I did,” said Holloway, “but I did not register with Mrs. Lamb.” "Did you shake Mrs. Lamb and get • nother woman and take her to the hotel.” “Yes. I did,” he said. ‘ And who was she?” "I don't know her name.” he said. Identified by Clerk. L. E. AA'ilson, clerk at the hotel, brought a page of the register and took the stand and identified Hollo way and Mrs. Lamb as the couple who registered November 21. Deputy United States District At torney Keyser branded as fiction the defense's attempt to connect Hollo way with a robbery charge in some other city. Jesse Cranny and Kay Lones, at torneys who lost their liqflor eases just prior to the starting of the Lainb-Keislt r trial, and Keymond Coffey, who lias several liquor cases MM he tried, whispered advice to the defendant's counsel. Prosecutor Keyser called the jury's attention to tlie intervention of the defeated bar risters. Adele Garrison “My Husband’s Love” Madge Decided on Drastic Treatment of Bess Bean. I paid a tribute to Hess Dean's pow era of dissimulation during the short taxi ride to the Marvin station. That she was furiously angry with me X knew—slio would have enjoyed noth ing better: than to tantalize T.ella in her ostial apparently Innocent fash ion. But site chatted easily of com monplace topjes until we reached the station. Tt was evident that upon a second thought she had determined to risk no whit of her familiar foothold In the Durkee household by an open break with me. "Give my beet love to Mother Dur kee, " «he raid sweetly, as the train from Freeport pulled in, and I saw Delia waving frantically from the platform to let me know she had caught it. "Tell her I'm coming to see her as soon I’m permitted to do so." "I'm afraid you will have .to be pa Kent," I said In an equally sacchar ine voice. "Dr. Bralthwalto is very rigid in keeping visitors down to ~ the minimum until convalescence. X ^goubt whether anyone save members of her family will he permitted to see her for a week." "Always excepting the faithful family friend!" She permitted herself n parting sneer as 1 climbed the steps lo the platform. I waved my hand with a gay little laugh for answer, t.ella also waved to her. and then, seizing my arm she hurried me through two cars to a seat which had no one within earshot of a low tone. "Madge,” she sahl tensely, "how jid Bess Dean know about Mother Durkee’s operation? You know we have told no one. Hhe could not pos sibly have learned It from snyone else except Alfred—or—or—’ Madge Calms I.etla. "Or Dicky,” I finished calmly "WImt of It?” The answer. Invested with a non chatance which I was far from feel i11sr, appeared to have much the same effect upon her maid as a dnsli of fold writer in her face. She blinked and threw up her head In startled fashion. "Why—why—” she stammered, “doesn’t it show that—’’ "That she lias seen either your hus INDIGESTION causes bloating—gassy pains that crowd ttao heart—constipation. Almayt fad rtlitf mi comfort la CHAMBERLAIN’S TABLETS No griping—bo nausea—only 25 cants ; band or mine within the last few' days?" I interrupted in matter of fset tones, “i'll answer 'yes’ to that unqualifiedly. But I’ll add that it s nothing for either one of us to worry a"bout. It doesn't mean that either Dicky or Alfred planned the meeting. Either it was an accident or Bess Dean manoeuvered it.” She lifted her hand, which I saw Sas shaking with nervousness, and Id it. upon mine. ”1 know I’m an awful idiot, Madge,” she began quaveringly. "You're all of that and a good bit added,” I Interrupted, smiling down at her and taking the nervous, flutter ing little hand firmly in mine. “I thought we'd thrashed out this topic of Bess Dean and that you were safe from worry over her for a week or two at least. And here you are at the same old tricks again, I'm asham ed of you.” "I’m ashamed of myself,” she an swered, and I noticed with approval that there was decision in her voice. "With Mother Durkee in such straits. I'm a little beast to blood over my own troubles. Alfred’s Devotion. ’’Which aren't troubles at all, if you’ll only believe it,” X retorted, wishing devoutly that I could feel as sured of the truth of my sweeping statement. "I.et me tell you some thin!), my dear”—I salved my con science with the knowledge that at least the statement on my lips was the absolute truth—"while his mother is In such danger. Alfred won't know that Bess Dean, or any other woman save you. is on earth, anil he won't he very conscious of YOU Ft existence. You know what a devoted son he is.” “Yes, indeed. Poor Alfred!” she returned with a world of sympathy in her gentle, voice. “And every word you've said Is true. He's been like one distracted ever slnae he saw that Hr. Foxham In the city. I wonder if lie told Alfred something that the rest of us don’t know?” "Perhaps,” I said, thinking that I.etla, being the type which must worry over something, might better exercise her anxiety over her mother Inlaw-'s condition than over Hess Dean's machinations. J?ut privately I resolved that if my former col league had the audacity to force her self upon my frignds in this their hour of terrified anxiety, she would find me both on guard Rnd drastic In my treatment of her. -.
