Bessie Barriscale Presents
Playlet Written by Her
Husband.
Bessie Barriscale, who won success
on the stage of the spoken word be
fore she gained a place on the silver
screen, is headliner this week at the
orpheum In a protean playlet. "Pick
ing Peaches,” written by her hus
band, Howard Hickman. Miss Barri
•'cale does not find It necessary to
drag In any screen studio embellish
ment to gain favor In vaudeville. She
is an entertainer of unusual versatil
ity, enacting in her present offering
four roles of distinctive differences.
She appears first as Sally Danforth, a
maiden of the southland; then, Flos
sie Maddigan, telephone girl, with
bristling line of talk; Marquitta, Span
ish girl, and, lastly, Mary of the plain
home-town sweet girl type. In the
supporting cast are Jack Mervin.
I-auretta Allen, Eddie Tallman and
Howard Hickman. The four scenes
in which Miss Barriscale appears are
visualizations of the experiences of a
naval officer, who relates his affairs
of the heart to his mother In flash
scenes.
Dolly Kay, clever exponent of
syncopation, is assisted by Phil
Philips, pianist. Miss Kay has a
clever repertoire of topical songs and
a clever way of putting them over.
She won repeated encores yesterday
Pepita Granados, Spanish dancer, is
accompanied by Frances Drager,
^Ptarian Dale and Grace Muroft in a
neat dancing and musical act.
Jessie Fordyce, Pearl Hamilton,
Violet Hamilton, Arnette Creighton,
Joan Page and Helen Schroeder ap
pear In a clever musical and dancing
review, "Stars of the Future.” They
offer a dressing room scene and other
snappy features. Jim McLaughlin
and Blanche Evans scored a hit with
their New York East Side act, "On
a Little Side Street." Their bowery
songs and dancing went over with a
bang. Willie Rolls opens the show
with a thrilling roller skating act,
followed by Harry Rose, who jests
and sings and otherwise contributes
to the occasion. The screen features
are Aesop's Fables, Topics of the
Oay and Pathe News. A new velvet
irop curtain of rich materials and
design has been added to the stage
. ppurtenances.
U Petite Rerue Is Big Hit.
A seven-act feature bill at the World
theater this week with the La Petite
lt"vue as the headliner Is good enough
fn chase any brand of blues one might
possess.
In the revue are five clever girls
ho are graceful and know how to
lance. They were given "beaucop”
pplause. Beck and Stone, comedy
ong artists, were a scream with the
irge crowds that witnessed both per
il mances Sunday.
Gilbert Jaffy and Jess Sutton, vlo
mist and pianist, Omaha artists, also
roved to be popular. They are mak
:ig their first vaudeville appearance
's a duo. Their selections were both
^^pssical and jazz.
Davis and McCoy offered a novelty
it. Harry Coleman, the ventrilo
lulst, and Sullivan and Myers In their
iuto skit, and Diaz and Powers "Frol
ics on the Wire," are also a part of
the bill. Arthur Hays at the organ
again demonstrated his popularity.
The feature picture is Herbert Haw
linson in "A Million to Burn."
Farce Tops Bill at Empress.
There's many a laugh in "Not To
night Dearie” as presented by the
Graves Brothers Players at the Em
press this week. It is the second
week of this company’s engagement
at the Empress and principals and
chorus seemed to be hitting their
stride. The farce comedy is built
around a country hotel, some stranded
motorists and several marriage com
plications with a comedy constable,
actress and hotel keeper thrown in
for laughter reasons.
"Record Breakers" at Gayety.
Jack Reid, known in burlesque cir
cles as a producer of really amusing
and novel entertainment, sponsors
“The Record Breakers", this week’s
attraction at the Gayety theater, and
his reputation is adequately upheld
in this production. The audience is
given something to laugh at in prac
tically every line handled by the com
edians, while all the specialties are
welcome bits of diversion, giving the
show all that could be desired from an
entertainment viewpoint. Dadles’
matinee at 2:15 daily.
Yiddish Flayers at Braudels.
Omaha and vicinity will have an
opportunity to witness two perform
ances of the Grossman Yiddish Play
ers at the Brandeis theater Tuesday
and Wednesday evqnlngs at 8:30 p. in.
sharp.
Tuesday evening the company will
offer a comedy-drama In Yiddish with
a number of Yiddish specialty and folk
songs. The title of the play Is "Next
Door Neighbor.”
Wednesday evening's attraction will
he "The Home of Peace,” a play with
a great moral.
Coining to the Brandeis.
(leorge K. Wlntz's "Venus" will be
ut the Brandeis theater.
A huge walk, built entirely of steel
and glass, runs out from the stage
over the heads of the audience. The
double dozen W’lntz beauty contingent
romps out upon the structure, so If
pa thinks he caught, cold In his neck
just figure It out that he had a seat
directly beneath the promenade.
■•Venus" will play Friday night and
Saturday matinee and night at the
Brandeis' theater.
Earl Collins Released
on Federal Appeal Bond
FJarl Collins, former proprietor of a
chicken dinner resort on South ave
nue, who was sentenced to serve six
months in the county Jail following
conviction In federal court on liquor
charges, was released Saturday after
noon on an appeal bond. His case will
submitted to tha United States cir
cuit court of appeals.
