“If Winter Comes”
A Review of the William Fox Production,
Directed by Harry Millarde
GLADYS ROBERTS, 3205 Poppleton Ave., Omaha, Neb.
The average reader of Mr. Hutchinson's work "would not
upon first thought consider it material for a cinema master
piece, but such it is as shows the William Fox production,
directed by Harry Millarde. The book deals with the mental
life of Mark Sabre, harassed and tortured by the pressure of
events and of his fellow men. It is just this exposition of
intellectual processes which makes the picture so convincing.
“If Winter Comes” shows the definite and ultimate trend of
the cinema of the future, if it is to attain its highest end, the
mirroring of life; a discard of all useless action, needless mobs
and garish expenditures—and a gain of simplicity, art, truth
and beauty.
The various incidents of the book are filmed faithfully
and accurately, with added interest- in the fact that the ex
teriors were made in England. Despite the picture following
the story so carefully, dramatic construction is not sacrificed
—there are no unnatural nor forced scenes. In fact one feels •
that the story almost tells itself and is as inexorable as fate.
Mr. Millarde’s direction is both reverent and firm. Never
is one conscious of the director or of the camera.
After seeing Mr. Percy Marmont as Sabre, it would in- 1
deed be difficult to visualize anyone else in the role. He
lives Sabre and is Sabre, as fine and constructive a piece of ’’
acting as the screen has known. Miss Ann Forrest plays fine,
high-spirited Lady Tybar with both verve and dignity. M.ss ,
Margaret Fielding as Mabel and Miss Gladys Leslie as
Bright are excellent. »
The Misses Jinks, High and Low, offer effective comic
relief.
Surely this production, so worthily and assiduously done
could not be bettered.
MRS. M. F. TOWSLEE, 702 Cross St., Council Bluffs, la.
The screen version of “If Winter Comes" is a wonderful portrayal
of book characters to the screen. The story has been filmed word for
word and scene for scene as it was written and it thrills the spectator, for
it is so alive you forget you are looking at a picture and you live and
move with them. The characters are so vividly pictured true to life that
you laugh and cry with them, the same as you did when you read the b >k.
Percy Marmont as Mark Sabre makes you feel as if you were H r,::
his life and seeing it through his exper.ences. Margaret Fielding is as
chilly and unsympathetic a wife as the book Mabel is—while on the oth. r
hand. Ann Forrest is as lovable and sympathetic as Nona, herself. Syd-• y
Herbert acts and look the character, Twying, to perfection and all :ke
other characters are living version* of the book. It is as near a perfect
translation of book to screen as has ever been produced. The atmosph're
is all English, book and screen. The book is a character studv—the screen
portrayal is true to that ideal and the actors and actresses'have brought
out these characters in such a wonderful way that you live with the scr en
people all through the scenes and the turbulent emotions that seethe
through the minds and souls of each one, especially Mark Sabre. If you
loved the book you will love the picture. The picture show* the soul as
the book describes it,
J. LESTER SMITH. 680 South 28th St., Omaha, Neb.
One having read the book, "If Winter Comes," by A. S. M. Hutchin
son and later having seen the screen version, cannot but be impressed
with the vital difference existing between the two. The written story ap
pears pale-cold in comparison. The reviewers, after reading this work,
pronounced it a classic. The picture story is also a classic, throbbing with
a heart interest from start to finish.
The theme of the story is handled with great delicacy, and told with
an exquisite feeling that cannot offend the most sensitive taste—to this
the acreen has added a human touch, a human vitality, breathing life into Jk
the visionary.
To sum it all In a very few words—the screen version gives t<«#EV'^
written story What fragrance gives to a beautiful rose, what animation I
gives to « beautiful face and what personality gives to an individual 1
