r ——
Lawrence Lapp to Get Inter
state Commerce Award for
Saving Woman’s Life.
Cozad, Neb., Nov. 18.—Saturday af
ternoon at 3:30, 12 officials of the
Union Pacific will be at Cozad, and
award an Interstate commerce com
mission medal of honor to Lawrence
P. Lapp, Union Pacific station helper,
at Cozad. The medal Is bronze and
awarded only after a thorough inves
tigation and upon approval of the
president.
Approval of the reward to young
Lapp was one of the last official acts
of the late President Warren G. Har
ding, before he left on his Alaskan
tour. Young Lapp holds In his pos
session a letter written by Mr. Har
ding nfter leaving Washington, com
mending his heroic act. Only 24 per
sons have been so honored in the his
tory of the nation.
Mrs M. F. Johnson of Cozad was
the woman whose life Lapp is cred
ited with saving, on the morning of
December 30, 1922, at the Cozad sta
tion. Lapp was pulling a baggage
truck to the south side of the plat
form as Mrs. Johnson crossed the
trarks to board passenger No. 16,
eastbound. Her hat was blown off
and was carried down the track of
the oncoming train. Mrs. Johnson
started after her hat, and the train
was bearing down upon her. Seeing
she was about to be crushed to death.
Lapp leaped Into the path of the train
and carried the woman to a place of
safely, just as the train rushed by. I
Then he collapsed from the excite
ment. Every one who witnessed the
deed, and the engineer In the call,
believed for a short time that both
(0kvere under the train.
H. A., Adams, assistant to the gen
era] manager of the Union Pacific,
brought the matter to the attention
of the interstate commerce commis
sion at Washington.
In response to an invitation by the
citizens of Cozad, and the commercial
club of this city, the officials of the
Union Pacific will present the medal
SsMi-day In the Rialto theater at
Cozad.
.it 6:3ft in the evening the Cozad
commercial club will tender the of
ficlals of the Union Pacific system a
banquet in the basemeift of the Meth
odist church.
Wymore Citizens to Vote
on Site for High School
Wymore. Neb.. Nov. 16.—At a meet
ing of the Wymore city council it
was decided to call a special election
to be held Devember 18 for the pur
pose of a vote on the proposition of
whether or not the city council shall
turn over one block of ground, in the
west part of Wymore, known as Me
Candless park, for the site of the new
$200,000 high school building to be
erected here in the near future.
If the proposition does not carry
at the election the new school will be
built on the present school block, to
one side of the plot of ground, on
account of the present obsolete build
ing occupying the center of the block.
