Odd Zebu Cattle, With Hump Over
Withers, Owned in Cuming County,
West Point, Neb., Nov. 9 —Cuming
county people are convinced that
there Is always something new under
the sun. The fact Is that zebu cat
tle have Just been Introduced to the
populace. The cattle, one heifer and
a bull, are the property of John El
singer of West Point.
Zebu cattle (pronounced zee-boo)
have their native haunts in the tor
rid zone. The species originated In
Africa and was Introduced -to other
parts of the equatorial zone. The
zebu is a domesticated Indian ox, ac
cording to sopne authorities, while
others would have it that the zebu Is
i bovine extensively domesticated In
India, Africa, China and the Philip
pine islands. The animal Is charac
terized by a hump over the withers.
| When you gaze upon the animals
you are not sure whether you are
looking at a cow or only a close Imi
tation of one. The zebu cattle have
many redeeming features, however,
that may hold wide possibilities for
the farmers of this country.
| In the first place the cattle are
absolutely immune from all diseases.
This will doubtlessly appeal to the
farmer who is troubled with sickness
dn his herd. Furthermore, they have
never heard of any disease and have
yet to contract one. The old law of
the survival of the fittest has here
been worked to the highest degree.
One cross between the ordinary
cattle of Nebraska and a zebu will
render the offspring Immune. There
is one thing, however, that needs
testing before these cattle can be
called a success this far north, and
that is, can the zebu cattle withstand
] the rigors of our north temperate
| climate?
The two zehu at West Point are
the furthest north In the world, Ok
lahoma having heretofore been the
furthest north that the icattle have
thrived. At the present time the
cattle axe being kept In a horae bam,
being allowed the freedom of the
barnyard during the day.
The zebu cow’s milk la exactly the
same as the milk from a Jersey or
Holstein cow. The meat Is first class
and Is reputed to taste like elk- An
other peculiarity of these animals is
that the male is fully one-third small
er than the female. Their color Is a
sort of buckskin, with the greyish
hue predominating. Later on, at
tempts will he made to cross the zebu
with some Cuming county cattle.
Hallowe en Prank Leads
to Arrest of Two Boys
Beatrice, Neb., Nov. 9.—Charged
with smearing tar on the front of the
Courtland restaurant on Hallowe'en
Fred Thomas and Lloyd Cooper,
Courtland youths, w^e arrested to
day. The complaint 1s signed by
Elmer Johnson, owner of the res
tauant. The defendants will appear
for trial tomorrow.
Ogallala TX ill Have Big
Armistice Day Program
Ogallala. Neb., Nov. 9—Ogallala
will observe Armistice day with
music and speaking In the morning,
a big free "feed" at noon, a pageant
parade at 2, football game between
Ogallala high school and Chappell
high, and a dance in the Legion hall
at night. All towns in the county
will take part.
