pjPld, Old Story of “In-Laws”
Instigators
Father-in-Law Can Be Managed—Whole Battery of Sisters
and Brothers-in-Law Crush Wife’s
Courage.
BBy MARTHA ALLEN.
CKNOWLEDGEMENT of bene
fit received from advice given
in this column is gratefully re
ceived. ABC writes that she ventures
to ask for help in regard to her "in
laws,” because she has profited by
advice given to others. The danger
ous question of settling with trouble
some "in laws" will now be consld
ered. 'it is the old story. Her hus
band’s father lives at their home and
he is difficult to manage. The pa
tient woman is willing to put up with
that, but the fly in the oint
ment is meddlesome sisters and
brothers in-law. She says that they
poison the mind of the father and
the usual family quarrels follow. The
distracted wife even thinks of leaving
the husband, although she loves him.
The little daughter prevents hasty de
parture from .the home.
There ought to be laws enacting
severe corporal punishment for trou
blesome "in-laws." Several wise
judges who have presided over di
vorce courts have stated that these
very persons cause the majority of
divorces in this country. Since there
is no lawful help for such a deplor
able situation, the wife must make
the husband realize the dissension in
the home on account of hi* relatives.
He must either refuse to let them
enter the home or else depart to a
district beyond their control. Of
course,'a little forbearance Is neces
sary In all disputes. Sometimes the
family ax can be burled without any
casualties.
Florence: The peroxide and am
monia bleach will not Incite further
growth of the hair. It tends to kill
the roots of the hair, as a matter of
fact.
Underweight: Strenuous exercising
jjecessary for reducing is not neces
sary in putting weight on. Still a
certain amount of exercise must be
taken to stimulate to activity the
vital organs—heart, lungs, stomach,
liver and skin. The deep breathing
comes first in order of importance.
Marjorie: There are many good
oleaners on the market now. The spot
on the taffeta dress can probably be
removed easily if It hag not changed
the color. Consult a reliable druggist
for such a cleaner.
High School Girl: Question of class
colors and mottoes will have to be put
to a vote of the class. It Is Impossible
for me to make such a weighty de
cision. As for yells for your basket
ball team, that is something only your
school or class can choose. Knowing
nothing of the class colors or name of
the school. I am unable to help you.

“My Hugband’s Love**
How Lillian Interpreted Dicky to
Madge.
“Another man’s marital adven
tures!’’ I repeated incredulously after
Lillian, at her comment upon the
book which had so distressed me.
“Why! ho has described Dicky—”
“To the last parting of his hair, and
the suspicion of a dimple in his chin,"
she retorted flippantly.
“I grant you that. I don’t mean
his physical appearance," I said.
“That he might very easily take.
Dicky Is—” I stopped, flushing, furi
ous with myself for my embarrass
ment.
“•Handsome enough for any hero. I’ll
hand that to you too. Any old Greek
god would try to get under his pedes
tal for very shame if he saw our
Dickybird strolling down the street—"
She grinned at me provoklngly but
I ain used to her merciless teasing.
“He has limned Dicky’s brain and
disposition an faithfully as he has his
appearance," I persisted. "Why! them
are things in that book, which I would
have sworn only I—or you—could
have known."
“There are few shrewder observers
or analysts than Wlddecomb when he
gets up flmbitlon enough to write,"
Lillian answered. “But even he real
ises the truth of Stevenson's writing
axiom. You remember—’’
"The ’psychical surgery’ which he
employed in turning a dear friend into
that engaging monster, John Silver?"
I countered.
Dicky Only Part of Hero.
"Exactly, Wlddecomb took all the
principle and high mindedness out of
his portrayal of Dicky, and endowed
his hero—save the mark—these mod
ern 'heroes’ give me two or three se
vere pains—with the morals and
messy romances of another acquaint
ance of his. Now, Madge,” she looked
at me sharply, and I saw that I had
not been quick and shrewd enough to
conceal the Incredulity which I still
felt, despite her statement, "I never
deliberately deceived you, and I ex

pected you to believe me when I tell
you that there Is nothing In this book
which should give you a minute's un
easiness. I know Wlddecomb, and I
know .the man who is the supplement
ary angle to Dicky—have I my geom
etry right?—in the book. I meant to
bring you the book when it came out,
and explain the situation to you in
words of one syllable, before you had
it handed to you without explanation.
Why the Dicky bird should have been
asinine enough to bring the thing
home without first telling you about
it. I can't imagine, unless—'•
But she stopped abruptly, and eyed
me with a speculative air.
''Didn't you say you saw him tear
ing the title page out?"
"Yes."
“What was on It, or hadn't you
seen it?"
"Yes, I had seen It," I replied mis
erably. “It read, ‘To Benjamin, with
the author’s gratitude’.”
Expounding Dicky’s System.
“Now Isn't that exactly like the
Dicky-bird?" Dillian addressed the at
mosphere witheringly. “Bringing any
thing like that home and leaving it
where his wife could get hold of It?
Either he’s getting more rattle brained
than usual, or else—Madge—it looks
to me as if he brought the thing home
on purpose, to see if he could get a
rise out of you. I've always taken off
my best chapeau to you for the way
you've kept Dicky bird guessing since
you married him. I don't mean about
yovtr actions — the land knowrs
Caesar's wife was a modern flapper
compared to you—but about your real
sentiments concerning the divers and
sundry little performances he has
staged. You very seldom have batted
even an eye, and I think Dicky-bird,
in masculine fashion, Is puzzled and
a *blt resentful. It's a tribute to a
man's vanity, you know when his
wife or sweetheart'gets all teary and
excited over his derelictions, real or
fancied."
"You don’t advise me to try the
teary excitement, do you?" I asked
dryly.
"Not on your diamond anniversary,'’
she responded promptly. "The Dicky
bird needs just that flavor of uncer
tainty In his emotional menu. But I
don’t put it past him—to quote your
mother-in-law—to try to rouse your
Jealousy. But 1 must say that he s
losing his fine artistic touch. Veit
clumsy work, that with the fly leaf.
I'm surprised at him."
