Lincoln, Oct. 20.—Building and loan
associations of Nebraska have In
creased their assets 17 1-2 per cent
over last year, according to a state
ment released today by the state
banking department. Assets of the
associations now total $108,798,586.16.
The total increase over 1922 Is $16,
8C3.856.59, and the greater part of the
amount Is taken up in first mortgage
loans. The report showing the con
dition of the associations June 30 fol
lows:

Nebraska Eggs Pay
Big Profit in East
Meadow Grove. Neb., Oct. 21.—I. J.
Scott, farmer near here, has shipped
his White Leghorn eggs to New York
city markets, where ho receives 42
cents a dozen for them, as against
22 cents cash or 23 cents in trade
which he would have beert paid here.
He declared that the 42-cent price
was what he received after he had
paid express and other expenses of
handling, including new egg cases.
The reason for the higher egg price,
It is said, is that the eggs were all
graded, the extra large ones and the
small ones taken out and po dirty or
washed eggs included in the shipment.
It. A. Stewart, county agent of Mad
ison county, declared that. "this 20
cent premium means a net profit for
Mr. Scott, because of a little extra
care in grading eggs and keeping a
uniform flock of standard hens."

Lincoln, Oct. 21.—P. E. Mlisseh),
chairman of the department of poul
try husbandry of Nebraska Agricul
tural college, in an article in the
Cornhusker Countryman, the college
monthly paper, states that about half
of Nebraska's annual egg production
is finally shipped out of the state.
"About 2,000 cars of eggs, each
containing 450 standard case*, are
shipped out each year to satisfy the
breakfast, lunch and dinner needs of
folks in Boston, Pittsburgh, New York
city, London, Liverpool and Havana,”
Mr. Mussehl states in his article.
In discussing the elements which
determine egg prices, Mr. Mussehl
ates, "I believe the consumer real
iy makes the market. This depends
upon the supply and his ab lity to
purchase. After this is established
wb should deduct distributing
charges, transportation and prepara
tion charges, together with a reason
able profit for the services performed,
and the farmer gets what is left.”
The poultry husbandry expert, in
his art cle, takes up the grading of
eggs, declaring that color, size and
cleanliness are almost as large fac
tors on markets a* are the qualities
of eggs. He states that “practically
all of the eggs laid by healthy hens,
fed normal rations, are extra fine
quality at the time of laying. Eggs
laid by healthy hens do not vary
greatly in interior quality when they
are laid. They do vary, however, in
size and color. Reference to a price
sheet will show that large eggs are
most desirable."
Great emphasis is also placed on
cleanliness, as a factor influencing
the market value of eggs. Mr. Mus
sehl says: "Dirty eggs spoil much
more quickly, they do not possess
pleasing appearance, are not fit for
storage, and therefore arc not as
much in demand as clean eggs of the
same quality. We may eliminate a
large percentage of dirty eggs by
providing plenty of nests for hens <nt
least one for every six hens) and by
gathering the eggs often."
» Concluding, Mr. Mussehl states
that "chemists can find no difference
in the food value of white and brown
eggs, but there is a difference in
I commercial value at certain markets.
Closely graded eggs of uniform color
are always ih greatest demand."
Teachers Will Meet
in Holdrege Oct. 31

Holdrege, Neb., Oct. 21—For three
days. October 31, November 1 and 2,
Holdrege will be host at the annual
meeting of the Southwest Nebraska
Teachers' association. Information
from the state officers assures an en
rollment this year of nearly 700 or
more.
Professor C. K. Morse, president
of the association, has formulated a
program whereby persons of state and
national repute will nddress the con
vention. Among them are J. S. Kroh,
president. State Press association;
Thomas L. Wilson, second vice presi
dent, State Federation of Labor; Mrs.
George W. Wentz, piesldent. Ne
braska Mothers and Parents associa
tion; E. P. Cubberly of Lelarid
Stanford university; Alice Howell and

Second Growth Potatoes
in Use at Pawnee City
Pawnee City, Neb., Oct. 21.—Sev
eral Pawnee City citizens have heen
having second crop potatoes for ta
ble use during the past few days.
This Is unusual for this section of
the country, but the first killing
frost made It possible. E. L. Me
Claughery and L. O. Green are two of
the Pawnee City residents who have
heen successful In raising second
growth potatoes.
Thirty-Nine Cases Up for
Trial in Pawnee County

October term of district court for
Pawnee county w.ll convene Mon
