MartinalU made his debut with the Metropolitan in 1915, after a meteoric opera career In Italy, his birthplace. Hia earliest musical inclinations were instrumental. He was clarlon etlst in a regimental band, before the bandmaster one day discovered that he could sing. Followed a course of training at Milan, and later an en gagement In Puccini’s "Girl of the Golden West.” Martineili sang in this opera all over Italy and ap peared at Monte Carlo and Covent Gardens, London.
