    Rail Commission
Cannot Testify
at Rate Hearing
__ c
But Will Furnish Data to As
sist in Lower Livestock
Schedule to
Omaha.
Lincoln, Sept. 26. — Harry Sackle
ford. representative of the Livestock
exchange of South Omaha, was un
able to secure the active assistance of
the state railway commission today
In a readjustment of freight rates to
the Omaha markets.
Although the department will turn
over all available data to Shackle
ford to use at the hearing to be held
in Washington October 20, members
of the commission are unable to per
sonally assist because the commis
sion is working with the interstate
commerce commission on the case.
Ilules of joint procedure forbid mem
bers of either commission appearing
to present testimony.
Shackleford may secure an assist
ant of Attorney General Spillman if
consent can be gained, but Hugh
Lamaster, special counsel for the rail
way commission on Spillman’s staff,
is barred as well as members of the
commission.
The commission is unanimous in
its belief that rates from Sioux City
into Nebraska territory should be
lowered, but are divided on the ques
tion of rates from other points. Com
missioners Taylor and Randall are
in favor of scaling down the higher
late which was put in force several
years ago to equalize rates from
points in Nebraska to Kansas City
and St, Joseph. Commissioner Browne
will recqmmend the introduction of
the north Missouri scale.
