    Nebraska Counties Add $174,545
To Tax Bills for This Year

Ppecial Dispatch to The Omaha Iter.
Lincoln, Sept. 23.—W. H. Smith, state tax commissioner, has issued n
statement showing that county boards in Nebraska will raise $174.545.OS
more by taxation in 1023 than In 1022. The total to be spent by all counties
his year is $0,800,874.43. Following is a table showing *4he total raised in
each county tills year and the increase or decrease over last year:

Learning a Trade Makes Strides
From Period of Apprenticeships
Manual Education Now Facilitated by Special Schools and
Practical Classroom Work; Pupils Given Prac
tice in Actual Operation.
•'Learning a trade" has made
vast strides from the day of appren
ticeships.
Then the youth who sought to be
come a skilled workman was "bound
out” to some master of his chosen
craft. Followed an arduous period
years before the neophyte was ad
mitted to Ills craft. Even medicine
and law w^ra learned through the
medium of apprenticeship.
Most apprenticeships were served
with but poor food and even poorer
lodging. In the days before the
French revolution, it was even neces
sary to pay exhorbitant fees.
Taught in School.
This year when the young Oma
han seeks to learn a trade, it is not
necessary for him to practically sign
his life away for a long period. With
out interrupting his other education,
he flies into a classroom every day
at Technical High school and learns
io do the work which he has chosen.
The great aim of the new school,
now rapidly nearing completion, is
to produce better American citizens,
according to Dwight E. Porter, prin
cipal. Hut in this project the task of
preparing the students efficiently for
life is not forgotten.
Date for the opening of Technical
High school has been postponed from
.September 24 to October 15.
Inability to complete the building
on time is given as the cause.
Following the postponed opening,
there will be three terms of 11 weeks
each, instead of four terms of nine
weeks, and the Christmas vacation
will be shortened, it was announced.
In the mechanical drawing depart
ment, pupils will plan a small home.
These plans will l>e blueprinted in
the school's blueprinting shop on the
roof of the building and then sent
to the manual training depart
ment, where the building will them
lie constructed. The mill work will
i ome from the mill shop of the
school, where pupils will have pre
ciously made It from lumber, dried
in their own drying kilns. Embryo
olectrlclans will Install the house wir
ing and even the plumbing will be
put in by students as soon ns a
plumbing course Is started. When the
house is completed, it will bo sold,
laised on skids, taken oi/t. of the
building and moved away. The money
from the sale of the house will be
used to buy new material, thus mak
ing the department, self-supporting.
The big cafeteria, belonging to the
school will have competition in the
practice cafeteria, which is to lie run
by the classes In advanced household
arts. The girls must make the food
in their cafeteria so attractive as to
draw trade away from the school
lunchroom and make their classes cost
the school nothing
Another self-supporting part of the
-chool is to ho the catering depart
ment. A salesroom for the cakes,
pastry and salads prepared by the
students lias been built.
Practical experience in journalism
will 1*) gained by the journalism
i lasses In publishing the school paper,
which will be printed by the printing
department.
The commercial wires of I he North
western railroad have been run into
the commercial telegraphy rooms of
the school and It Is from here that the
train dispatchers and telegraph opera
tors of the future will come.
. No Matrimonial Bureau.
^*i)ns department, however, has foiled
to he made self-supporting. No
matrimonial bureau has been provided
to take care of the flow of excellent
housewives which will issue from the
school's domestic science department.
Girls will be expected to get their'
husbands for themselves as they have
shown themselves thoroughly capable
of doing In the past.
It Is even possible that the next
Bernhardt the world produces will not
announce In her memoirs that she
went on tho stage at tender age of
11, but will Instead say, "I got my
fundamental and most helpful knowl
edge of tho stage from a course in
dramatics which I took, at Technical
High school In Omaha while yet in
my teens.”
Technical High school will even
turn out window dressers. With Its
new equipment. It Is said to he the
best technical high school In the
country furnishing courses which
other and bigger schools da not and
giving those courses, which the others
do, in more detail and in a more
practical way.
For Omaha this new school marks
the end of the day when the high
school graduate stepped out Into the
world of Industry and trade and began
to realize how little he knew of busi
ness and how useless he was. It
marks the beginning of a new era—an
crs when a hoy or girl after gradua
tion may Immediately take his or her
place as a useful citizen and n pro
ducer in the world.
Underwood Throws Over
League of Nations Issue
Washington. Sept. 23.—Senator Os
car W. Underwood. Alabama's
avowed candidate for the democratic
presidential nomination, tonight tossed
the league of nations as a potential
issue into the graveyard of politics.
Althougii the Alabama senator was
former President Wilson's spokesman
for years in the senate and directed
the league fight in ptlfl, while demo
cratic leader, he declared the league
was "no longer a national issue."
